Glucose Testing

I had the gastric bypass surgery almost 4 years ago and am still doing well. I gained a tad back, but only about 10lbs which Im working on right now. My husband and I are considering starting a family and I was reading about the glucose testing. My body still does not tolerate sugar at all so I was wondering if anyone had to deal with the glucose testing or if the docs have an alternative or whether I need to worry about it at all? Just curious!

Mine had me go in two hours after eating and get tested.

Even though I had VSG, I don't believe that the test results would be accurate for me. I rarely consume 75gr of sugar in an entire day much less chugging all that sugar at once would probably make sick. I don't necessarily dump, but my body isn't used to that amount of sugar.

I discussed with my ob, and we decided that I would do at home testing for 2 weeks. I stuck myself and monitored/logged my blood sugars 4 times per day. My numbers remained perfectly the entire time. I had to test first thing in the morning before eating, then 2 hours after my 3 biggest meals of the day.

It wasn't pleasant, but I'd much rather do it this way than have to drink that nasty glucose drink.

Thats interesting, I never thought of testing regularly as an option. I will probably bring that up when it comes time. I cannot drink that stuff at all. I dont want to risk the pain that goes along with it. I stay away from sugar altogether unless its naturally occurring. Anytime I have sugar over a certain amount I get severe cramping, shortness of breath, the whole 9 yards. I dont really dump but all the other symptoms are terrible. So I stay away from it. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Hi fellow Michigander! I've had 2 babies post-op and both times I did a fasting draw and then went and ate a normal breakfast/lunch and returned 2 hours later and had a 2nd draw. Both times came back good!

I just received info from my surgeon today.  It said the glucose test is not recommended (for RNY'ers anyway.)  And that a fasting blood test would be the way to go.  I don't know what my ob will want to do.  But I am planning to refuse the GTT and insist on following my surgeons advice.

As the patient, you are entitled to refuse ANY tests you don't want to have done. I refused the normal glucose testing. Since I still want to keep track and make sure I don't hve GD, I just test my fasting and post-meal glucose levels myself at home using a glucometer.
