Coughing - cough syrup question

I have been sick with a cold for 3 weeks. Everytime I cough it hurts my belly. I finally went into urgent care today, I had to take my daughter anyway, so I had them see me too. He says I have bronchitis but that he doesn't want to give me antibiotics just yet, but he prescribed a cough syrup called Hydromet which has homatropine and hydrocodone in it. We discussed the pregnancy and he said I could take this syrup but it would be best just to take it before bedtime. I just looked online after I got home and it's a Categoy C drug. Is this really ok to take? Has anyone else taken prescription cough medicine while pregnant? I am really tempted to take some tonight before bed as I'm sleeping horribly anyway and then with the cough on top of everything it just is so much worse. But I want to double check everything I can to see if what other's have done before. Thank you!

No I haven't. It wasn't on my list of over the counter medications that I could take. There was absolutely nothing on there for a cough.

With it being Cat C I would almost think that it'd be safer just to use the antibiotics and get it kicked from your system before it has a chance to become pneumonia. But that's just my completely unprofessional opinion.

I really don't want to take Category C drugs. I don't even like to take Tylenol but I just am so tempted cause of all the coughing and it keeping me awake. I think I may call my OB too and double check with them.

a dr as well as a pharmacist know the different classes of medicines and when certain ones are ok to take later but not early or vice versa. You have to have faith in your dr that he would not give you a medicince that was not safe. I mean reallt there is no way to say 100 % either way if a drug is safe because no pregnant mama is going to say I will take these drugs and see how my baby turns out. You have to weigh the benefits and the possible known side effects. In the end its what your comfortable with and what feels right to assure your baby gets here safe and sound. I assume you picked your dr and stayed with her because you like her and trust her, why do you question that now?

I didn't pick this doctor, I went to urgent care and the doctor I saw there prescribed me the cough syrup knowing that I was pregnant. I will call my OB though and double check with her.

If you can handle the sugar, honey works really well to calm a cough.  In fact, when studied in children it worked as well, or in some cases better, than the cough medicine.
