Post-op = worse/more morning sickness??

I'm curious if having gastric bypass makes us more prone to morning sickness or something? I'm 15 weeks and seem to be fighting round 2 of headaches, nausea and greying-out when I stand up... I'm eating regularly, I know I had dangerously low blood sugar in my first month... got a couple weeks relief, then yesterday, BAM, it hit me all over again. Do you think we just feel these surges of hormones more than others? I feel like absolute CRAP.

Wow... 34 views and NO input from any of you. Am I missing something? Is this a Pregnancy forum or an actual pregnancy after WLS forum? Most of the posts I read have very little to do with the effects of WLS on pregnancy and seem to be more about trying to get pregnant or pics of babies... I'm really frustrated at the lack of information out there on Pregnancy after WLS and I thought this would be the place to come for some advice from people who've been through this, but I suppose not. I'm not trying to be rude, but I'm desperate for advice because I am not as happy as I feel I should be about being pregnant, feel like CRAP and just wish someone could assure me that at least SOME of this is normal. Unlike many, this is my first pregnancy, so I don't know if this is all just what I have to endure to be part of the "secrets of pregnancy club" or if WLS has anything to do with how ****ty I feel. Seems like all my friends have just loooooved being pregnant, so I feel I can't talk to anyone.

You have to factor in that there is not nearly as much "foot traffic" here as on the other forums, so you may need to wait longer to get a response.  Also, since people here have had all types of surgeries, it may take a while for someone who can answer your bypass question.  The ladies here can be very helpful, but you'll need to be patient.  Here's my two cents... I had a sleeve, not bypass, but I've never had morning sickness with either pregnancy.  My symptoms with both pregnancies (one pre WLS, one post-op) were very similar.  I'm one of those annoying girls who "looooved being pregnant", so I would have read you post and chosen not to respond since I really don't have anything helpful to add.  Hang in there.  Hope you get what you're looking for here.

Hi Grace. It could be that no one had any advice to offer and that is why no one has replied yet. I don't think RNY would make us be more prone to m/s. You might just be prone to it in general. My suggestion to you is to get your vitamin levels checked ASAP. The greying out could be an iron deficiency. Also, the extra blood we are producing can make us dizzy. I am going through dizziness every morning right now. I know I am severely anemic and am going in for my 1st appt. with the hematologist on Monday and will be getting an iron infusion or 2 before my little girl comes. I did this with my last pregnancy and felt so much better after the infusions!
So here's the thing...I think some people (with or without RNY) have an easy time with pregnancy. Their bodies just handle it very well. My first pregnancy (both have been post-RNY) was a bit easier, but this one has been tough. The iron deficiency is definitley caused because of the RNY, but everything else has been normal pregnancy stuff.
I hope you feel better soon! Please get yours vits checked (0:

I have had 2 babies pre-wls and 13wk preg with 1st post-wls.  Both have been the same with the MS and resolved around 10-11wks.  I am also one of those that loves being preg.  You however may just be one of those poor women that don't feel well during the preg.  But you shoud be getting vit levels checked a least once a tri. to ensure that it's not something more than the effects of being preg.  Sorry you feel so crappy but it's not forever and you are rewarded with the love of your life in the end.  Now call your Doc and get orders for some labwork get it done then you will have a better idea of what your dealing with.

I did not have ANY morning sickness with my pregnancy, and I'm post-op. I don't thin kbeing post-op changes whether or not you'll have morning sickness; HOWEVER, each pregnancy is different even without WLS. You should never expect one to be like another, though I know it's tough not to compare.

Also, there's not a ton of stuff here about pregnancy after WLS specifically because, quite frankly, it's not that different! Just keep a closer eye on labs and supplements. There, that's the majority of the advice you need regarding post-op pregnancy.

Hi,  I am in my 21st week with my 4 th pregnancy, but 1st one post wls.  I had a sleeve 15 months ago.  I can say without doubt this has been my absolute worst as far as morning sickness, breast tenderness, dizziness.  I have had hyperemesis with this one and I needed iv fluid/iv vitamins until almost 16 weeks... I start iron infusions (venofir, sp?) next week.  One important difference is that I have had severe reflux since my sleeve and I am sure that complicates things.  I was just about to have a revision to a rny when I found out I was pregnant.  LOL   Since I shared the harder parts what I will say is my mobility, my carpal tunnel, my over heating, and the severe diabetes I had with my last pregnancies is WAY better this time!!!    Now my blood sugars are a bit too low and if I can get my b/p over 95/50 I am doing well!    Good luck to you!   Amy

I haven't had a post-op baby yet...but I can tell you that my first 3pregnancies were crappy in regards to morning sickness and headaches. I spent about 3-4 MONTHS in my bed each time. Some women are just sick when they are pregnant. I will fall over and pass out if I get pregnant and don't feel eternally nauseous. For me, it's just part of how I grow my baby beans.

I don't feel "human" until about 7 mos....just in time to rest a bit, THEN get the last few weeks of yucky feeling in before the baby is born...LOL All that being said, I would do it again in a heart beat!

You might just need more rest or more protein???  Congrats on the pregnancy, I would love nothing more than to be pukey right along side of you.

Sorry for the snappy reply and thanks for the input... I think I've been dealing with some pregnancy induced depression as well as the feeling sick bit, so my hormones are all out of whack right now. Sickness has subsided and vitamin levels were fine when checked, it's just the weepiness and insomnia that I'm dealing with now. It's just hard to talk to anyone about it because I feel guilty for feeling this way when it's supposed to be this happy time for women or no one takes me seriously and just says its hormones. But thanks for the replies everyone.

I don't believe that pregnancy has to be all daisies and rainbows for all of us. I sure as heck didn't think it was great to gain weight, have to pee constantly, and have pain in my joints again after losing all of my excess weight. It wasn't a horrible pregnancy, I delivered Tatum last October, and I'm 12 weeks pregnant again. This pregnancy has brought on major mood swings, and insane random nausea. I can eat a meal of say Thai food one day and a week later, eat the very same meal and I want to pass out from the room spinning and have intense nausea, and the nausea hits me at all different times during the day and night.

I had VSG, my 2 other pregnancies (1 pre VSG 1 post VSG) never gave me a hint of nausea. I was diagnosed with low blood pressure a year before I got pregnant, the dizzy, near fainting episodes increased dramatically in the pregnancy, my BP runs 90/50s and did through my last pregnancy. It's just not an overall super pleasant experience. Sure, it's all worth it, but some days, I am truly miserable with nausea. Plus, I can not puke to save my life. For whatever reason, I just can't puke.

Sure, hormones plays a role in it, but when you feel horrible, when your body is just worn out from growing another human, it's mentally and physically draining. I'm a hot mess taking care of 13.5 year old (going on 30) son and a 5 month old daughter all while being pregnant. Oh and my nausea didn't really start until week 9 almost week 10. It started with just chicken, then it moved to other foods and it's definitely not an issue of overeating, eating the wrong foods, or eating too fast. I'm nearly 3 years post-op, and this pregnancy is definitely more difficult and completely different than my other 2.

Hang in there ! ! !
