Decisions (rather long)

THanks for the input!  I know... 7 days is ridiculous.  Medicine here is very thorough, very paid for and very good  BUT  still a bit outdated on lenghts of stay.  For example... they keep kids with tonsillectomy 3 days in hospital still!  On one hand, it's good.  Safer...  if acomplication is going to occur you will most likely still be in the hospital.  For the babies, it's great if they're jaundiced or having nursing problems because we get all the support we can dream of.  On the more practical side... it's frustrating to 'have' to stay so long.

With my 'RNY'  I was there 6 days absolutely complication free, and I'll tell you I was going nuts!  It's just a different mind set and different standard of care.  It's not 'bad'  only frustrating when you'd like to be home much much earlier!

I'm going to talk to them today and ask if there is anyway to shorten the stay, that would make a big impact on my decision.

Here's my two cents...

I had a VBAC 11 weeks ago, and I'm so happy that I stuck to my guns and gave my body the chance to try labor!  When my first was born, I was in labor for 36 hours, pushed for 2 hours, and she just wouldn't come out... she was only 6lb 3oz.  Because she was so small, the doctors kept trying to convince me not to try labor because they felt it was likely going to end in another c-section. I really believed in my ability to have a natural birth and knew I'd be much more comfortable with a c-section if I had at least given myself the chance at a vaginal birth.  I want several more kids and didn't want to make each pregnancy riskier by continually having c-sections unless absolutely necessary.  When my son was born I was in labor for about 12 hours and it was pretty easy labor until about the last hour and a half.  My son was born after about 15 minutes of pushing with 2nd degree tearing.  My stitches have had some trouble healing correctly, but I'd still take this over a c-section ANY day!  My recovery was so much easier, shorter stay in the hospital, able to lift my older daughter, etc.  For me, I knew this was the right decision.  I think you just have to go with your gut!

PS My son was actually bigger than my daughter and came out soooo much easier... I think the baby's position and "determination" to get out is a huge factor.

I think I'm on the same page here.  If I have to have a section after trying... so be it.  But if I don't try, I'll never know.  The 3rd degree tear wasn't too terrible to heal from.  The problem was the uncontrolled loss of blood.  I'm not sure what the real risk is or why they couldn't possibly do an episiotomy to preven the tear....  I've got a list of questions yet to be answered.

We'll see.  I hate this feeling of not knowing what to do.  I was soooo set on VBAC until I talked to this guy yesterday..... now all the uncertainty is back..  : (   Bottom line, I just want a healthy baby, but don't want surgery unless absolutely necessary!

Cheers to you Paula!

Here in the states they cant make you stay. If you and the baby have been checked by a doctor and given a clean bill of health there is no reason to stay, They may tell you that your leaving AMA but it is your choice and as long as you feel confident in the doctor who delivered and checked on you and your baby post delivery then leave. That goes for both a vaginal and c-section. A c-section you may want to stay at least 3 days just so they can keep an eye on the incisions (but if im not mistaken your a nurse practioner) and you could do that at home. Vaginal deliverys leave after 24 hours. You have the ultimate say when it comes to yours and the baby medical stay and when you leave, this is based on having a healthy baby which I am sure you will. Recovery at home is so much better, simple things like sleeping and showering in your bed and shower, having your family around, being able to relax and just be comfortable at home helps with your recovery, I believe it also helps with the feelings of overwhelmed and even post partum depression when you can be recovering in the comfort of your own home.

Just my 2 cents worth...if you sign out AMA your insurance company can refuse to pay for your stay/services so keep that in mind as well!!

Take care!  Signing out AMA with MANY insurances means you foot the bill for the entire hospitalization AND if something does go wrong  (whether or not it's the docs fault)  you have no legal recourse!!!

Did talk to another doc yesterday and she said it could be as few as 5 days. That's not sooo bad.

as much as 5 days even sounds long now that i think about it, it sounds like it coule be nice. yes i had great recoveries from both my births and was comfortable and confident in my abilities as a first time mom and then a mom to a second baby not all women have it that way. if you tired or even just want to take a shower there is somebody there to help and even as experienced moms we still can run into having questions and need support so i say soak it up and try to relax and get prepared physically and mentally for when you get home and dont have a "call" button at your fingertips!!
