Question For the PCOSer's
Morning everyone!!!
Once upon a time ago, with one of my losses, I had stopped my Metformin as soon as I found out I was pregnant as per the Dr told me too I had. I ended up lossing that embryo (the only embryo out of the four prior losses) Now Shari M, and Sarah V had told me that if I got pregnant again, DO NOT STOP TAKING THE METFORMIN. Sorry got that off my chest...LOL Well I have listened to their advice and my NEW Dr is ok with that, so far. My question is....I am going into my 12th week and do I continue to take it thru the 2nd trimester and part of the third? Not sure when to stop, I know I have to stop sometime before the end of the 3rd trimester due to complications that would result during delivery with me or the baby. Anyone out there that has taken the Metformin throughout their pregnancy that could send me in the right direction. How long did you take it, how much (I take 1500mg a day) and when you came off it. Thanks!!!
Oh, I also go on Monday for my NT Scan (here we call it IPS Screening but it is the same thing). I am soooo, nervous. I am hoping everything is still ok, I have been still trying to find a used doppler (a good one) to purchase. I haven't seen or heard the HB as of yet. I am so jealous of you gals that get the info right away from your scans. Canada's rules suck!!! Monday, providing everything is ok, DH and I get to see my bub and hear the hb and bring home pictures. Then at my 20 week scan or there abouts, we get a dvd for $20.00 of the scan. Man I can't wait!!!
I will update Monday when I get home with all that jazzy info!!!
Thanks for the help on the Metformin issue AGAIN!!!

First off congratulations!
On the metformin issue I stayed on Metformin the entire pregnancy with my DS 3 years ago. I was well over 300lbs and very insulin resistent. My DR wanted me on the whole time and I think it saved me from developing gestational diabetes. The pregnancy went perfect. I'm not sure why Dr's have their patients stop in the 3rd trimester. I even kept on it after delivery in the hospital and all the way up until my VSG. When I started my pre-op diet for VSG this time last year my blood sugar kept dropping too low so my surgeon had me stop Metformin. I haven't been back on it since and I'm currently 32 weeks pregnant with my twins and they are healthy and growing great. So I'm not help... If it helps I was doing 1500mg a day during my first pregnancy and up until my VSG. I would just follow the doctors instructions. Good luck!

Hi there! I'm hardly ever on here anymore so I'm glad I checked in today. Congratulations!
I stayed on Metformin all the way through my pregnancy and stopped a few days before my induction date. In my case, I'm Type II Diabetic in addition to PCOS so it helped control my blood sugar. I take 2000mg a day.
When I asked my RE how long I should take it he very emphatically said "the whole pregnancy" and when I graduated to the OB, she was ok with that. I was very happy not to have to argue that with her. I had done tons of research (as you know) and was very comfortable that it was safe. I have a happy, healthy, brilliant 20 month old now.
I got a simple doppler on Amazon for about $25 that worked just fine. I could hear the heartbeat with headphones. It didn't track the heart rate or anything but that was all I wanted...just the reassurance of hearing her heart beat. I quit using it once I felt her moving regularly. I didn't pick up a heartbeat until 16 weeks, though. The key is to make sure it's "doppler" and not one of those "prenatal listeners" that doesn't use doppler.
Good luck!

My RE wants me to stay on the met until I'm at least 20 weeks along. I asked if I could stay on it the whole time and he said yes. I have read so much about metformin helping PCOS mom's prevent diabetes etc. There is a website that I love called SoulCysters.net. There are message boards all about metformin during pregnancy with links to all kinds of great scientific articles supporting its use during pregnancy. Good luck! I'm glad your new doctor is being smart about it :)
After re-reading your post, let me just add that the reason you would stop before your delivery is in case you end up having a c-section. You would be advised to stop taking it before ANY surgery that could involve general anesthesia because of an increased risk of lactic acidosis. You can google for more info!
