Chemical odor while nursing?

Every now and then while I'm nursing Liam, I'll notice a weird chemical smell, like acetone (I actually haven't noticed it super recently).  Last night while googling something completely unrelated I found that this smell on your breath can be a serious sign of diabetes.  The problem is, when I would smell it, I have no idea who it was coming from.  I never smelled it on the baby at other times, and my milk smells fine when I pump.  I will ask the doctor about it when we go back next week (I don't consider it urgent since I'm not sure when I last noticed it) but now I'm curious if anyone else has ever heard of such a thing.  Sorry if my description is confusing... this is why I hadn't really looked into it when I noticed it happening, it is hard to describe.

Do you exercise a lot? There is a toxin that can be released in the breast milk called lactic acid, if you do exercise. Makes the milk kinda sour/bitter. It is really strong right after exercise, and may not even be noticeable at all at other times. Sometimes the baby will not even nurse if it is really bad. Just a thought.

Haha, I wish I could blame exercise!  The only exercise I've been getting lately is lifting Christmas cookies to my mouth.  Today starts the post baby/ post holiday detox!

Guess it was worth a guess. I too am victim of the Christmas cookies! LOL
I refused to make any this year and only ate some at my moms house. I was good this year and did not even touch the fresh baklava!

Ketosis can give the same kind of smell, even when mild.  If you're enjoying the Christmas cookies, may not be a factor.  But, it fluctuates, so could occur on days you aren't getting enough carbs.  Did you adjust your carbs for what you need while nursing so that they're high enough??

Probably not the answer... just could be a contributing factor.

Let us know what doc says, I'll be curious to know.
