9 months after surgery and pregnant..help
I had gasttric bypass in March of 2010. I didn't have any problems at all, i'm still finding out that things don't agree with me but it's nothing Ican't handle. I lost about 100 pounds and feel great. I got married in October of 2011. My life is so awesome. My husbandand I are very aware of not becoming pregnant before the 18 months after surgery is up. I have been on borth control and took it the same time every day. I found out a week before Christmas that I am pregnent. My husband and I are excited but aware of the situation too. I just wondered if anyone has any pointers for me. Vitamins, exersize, etc. Happy Nerw Year!
I've been very lucky in that my surgeon and OB have a great line of communication. I also had surgery in March 2011 and I'm just about 12 weeks pregnant. So far everything is going mostly fine. I've had crippling morning sickness so I've lost almost 15 pounds this month but it's understandable. They did prescribe me Zofran for it and it's helping. You might want to ad a folic acid supplement and DHA to your vitamins but otherwise wait to see what your OB tells you. Exercise is really good to continue during pregnancy as long as you're getting the calories you need. Currently, my doctors have made me stop doing anything but walking every day because my calorie intake is really low. If I can't get my calories up in a few weeks when the morning sickness should pass then there's the chance of IV nutrition treatments. Otherwise both doctors think it will be a totally healthy pregnant. :) I also was on BC, btw. I used the NuvaRing. Found out I was pregnant when I got routine bloodwork done for my surgeon.
Congrats on your pregnancy!

Well, for future reference, birth control pills after a malabsorptive surgery are NOT a good idea (unless you're also using a backup method) because there's no way to tell if you're absorbing it all or not.
Just make sure you have your labs checked throughout your pregnancy and keep taking your vitamins. If you're still losing weight, then you may need extra ultrasounds later on to monitor the growth of the baby since you may not gain weight (or may gain less than a normal patient).
And congratulations!
