Nutrition During Pregnancy/Breastfeeding
Hello All. I am 7 months out from VSG and 10 weeks along now with my first. Happy about it, not planned but obviously I wasn't being careful enough. Either way it is a blessing we are looking forward to. I have lost 80lbs since surgery. I'm not so much concerned about losing more weight because of course my priorities have shifted. My main concern is that my baby is getting enough from me. At 7 months, my restriction has let up but it is still pretty good. I am concerned that I am not getting enough nutrients to my baby. I haven't had morning sickness really, just really picky about what I eat and NOTHING sounds or tastes good. Also, it seems like before I found out I was pregnant, I stalled. In the last 4 weeks alone I have lost 10lbs and my weightloss has seemed to pick up. I take my vitamins daily, but I did read online that only a small percentage of supplements are actually absorbed. Should I take double the amount? I am also concerned about breastfeeding and would like to hear from any breastfeeding moms out there. Being post wls, would that make our milk less potent or nutritious for the baby? Should I take extra vitamins. Anyway, just concerned. I'm still eating very little everyday. It is said your body needs an extra 300 calories a day during pregnancy. Well I"m probably still under less than 1000 calories a day. I never in my life thought I would have to make and force myself to eat. I literraly am force feeding my self it seems. Anyway, any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Hello, congratulations! I got pregnant with my twins when I was 5months out (not planned) from my VSG. I'm less than 7 weeks from delivery and they are very healthy babies. I can't eat much in one sitting but I'm hungry all the time. For now just do the best you can. I know it's hard in the beginning when everything sounds awful. I had really bad morning sickness and lost 20lbs the first trimester. After that things got better though, I'm currently up 3lbs and feel good. Just have your doctor keep an eye on your baby's growth and your vitamin levels. I wouldn't double up on your vitamins unless there is a deficiancy, could do more harm then good. Even with twins though I've been fine with my one Target brand prenatal a day. My vitamin levels have looked great this whole time. The important thing to remember is that your baby will take anything it needs from you, you just have to be sure you don't run yourself down. As far as nutrients while BF'ing I can't chime in, I don't plan to nurse and I want to reduce my calories and carbs after the twins arrive so I can hopefully reach my goal weight of 175. Good luck, you'll do great!

I lost 12 pounds in my first trimester - it's not a big deal. The baby is SO SMALL at that time and isn't even directly getting what you eat/drink for much of that first trimester.
The only way to know if you need more supplements is to GET LABS DONE. When was your last full set of labs? How were the results? What supplements are you currently taking? Most OBs are NOT on top of this issue for WLS patients, so I would work with someone who is, be it someone from your surgeon's office, a WLS dietician, your PCP, etc. My PCP and my OB work together to get my lab orders and results and whatever else I need, but it's rely up to ME to make sure I'm doing all I can. I am proactive about my supplementation, and I do not just ask for lab orders but rather bring in a list to my doc of which labs I need to have run (most docs will NOT run enough to paint the full picture).

I got pregnant 6 months out from VSG and had a healthy baby boy 7 weeks ago. I didn't have to take any extra vitamins and did just fine with nutrition. He was a little bigger than my first baby (pre wls) and is perfect. Nursing is going great, and again, I'm not doing anything special to get extra nutrients. He is gaining well and seems very satisfied with my milk. Good luck with your pregnancy.
