question about heartburn

I have the Duodenal Switch.  Since surgery I have had acid reflux and continue to take Nexium for it.  I also typically have to take one dose of TUMS at bedtime (I think laying down aggravates it).

I'm now pregnant (about 6 weeks) and in the last week have had to take more Tums than I can shake a stick at.  Is it normal to experience heartburn so early in pregnancy?  I knew it could be an issue but didn't realize it would start this early.

Also, I will ask my doctor too, but any idea how many TUMS is really too many.  I malabsorb a ton of what I take in, so I'm not that worried but would like to know your thoughts.

Thanks!

My concern with too many TUMS would be that they are basically calcium carbonate supplements, which, I believe, increase the risk for kidney stones.

Meanwhile, how's your diet? If your intake has changed, that could also affect your reflux. I'm almost 23 weeks along and haven't had any heartburn yet at all, but then I also didn't have it after my DS, so I may just be one of those lucky people who doesn't have much acid to begin with. In my first trimester, I stayed low in carbs and high in protein and fat and ended up only having any negative pregnancy symptoms for about a week - getting my diet back on track seemed to make everything go away!

I have been adding in another double shake, but haven't changed much else yet.  Some extra vitamins, but the heartburn doesn't necessarily coordinate with the timing of my vitamin regimen.

Should I worry about kidney issues since I'm malabsorbing the calcium carbonate anyway?  Most days I don't go over the recommended dosage on the package but it does say don't take longer than 2 weeks (ha, I've been taking it for 18 mos.).

You may be absorbing more than you think. Carbonate is more difficult to absorb in general because it requires a more acidic stomach environment to break down, but if you're taking it WHEN you have acid, then it's likely getting broken down for better absorption.

Anyway, I would ask a professional, though I'm not quite sure a dietician, OB, or surgeon would really know the right answer since none of them are experts in ALL that you've got going on. Though an OB might at least be able to suggest other ways of reducing reflux since it's a common pregnancy concern.
