kind of a long day
Yesterday I was schedule for my first OB appointment (with a brand new OB/GYN since I moved a few months ago). The new office couldn't be more convenient for me, because it's actually in a different part of the hospital where I work. They just built this new part of the hospital so everything is new and shiny, and the OB/GYN's just moved in, so they're still getting used to things. Hopefully that explains the craziness.
So they do my viability scan and they're puzzled, because they don't find anything. Now, I knwo there has to be something, somewhere, because I had a +POAS, a missed period, tender brests, and the beginnings of nausea. The OB says, "well, your probably just too early for it show up, maybe you conceived later than you thought (well I was using an OPK, so I can even tell you when I ovulated...), we'll check your HCG and it will probably be borderline and well have you back in a couple of weeks. If it is high we'll have you back sooner.
I go back to work. Around 11am I get an e-mail saying I have an ultrasound scheduled for the next day at 9:30am. No explanation. I call the office and ask for someone to call me back with details and also to reschedule for the afternon because Tuesday mornings are busy for me.
Since the first appointment was shorter than expected and I have left over PTO, I decide to leave work early. I'm literally driving out of the medical center around 3:45 when I get an e-mail that my HCG is 57,000 so they should really be seeing something and please come back for an ultrasound today because I may have an ectopic pregnancy. Ooookay.
I turn around and go back. After some confusion about where I'm supposed to go, they get me in with an ultrasound tech (instead of the doctor this time) who does a very long and thorough ultrasound, inside and out (like half an hour or so), then goes to talk to the doctor. She comes back and says, "Well, I can tell you that *I* see a baby, and it's where it's supposed to be."
Now, when they were getting me ready for my original appointment, I heard them futzing around with the ultrasound in the next room (like 3 people) and they did mention that it was a brand new machine. So, I'm pretty sure this all happened because they don't know how to use the fancy new ultrasound machine in the fancy new office!
I really, really hope they get their act together a bit more before my next appointment, because this did not really instill a lot of confidence!

The only thing that I find weird is that they are communicating with you via email- something as serious as an ectopic warrants a call directly from the OB or even a nurse.
