Cloveparis - your doctor is right. Vitamin A (in too great amounts) can be very dangerous for your baby. There are liquid prenatals available... that's what I have been taking :) Best of luck on your journey!

What KIND of vitamin A is it? Palmitate or retinol are the ones that can be dangerous - if some or all of it is from beta carotene, that's fine and harmless.

Also, the studies I've seen on this topic discuss amounts like 20,000IUs of supplemented vit A daily, not 5,000IUs, and that's in normal women with no malabsorption. I might start out by having your vitamin A level checked - if you're on the high end, then safe to change/cut back, but if not, I would stick with what you're doing.

Beta carotene is fine - not harmful. I would still have your vitamin A level tested, though, when you have labs run because beta carotene requires conversion in the body to become useful vitamin A, and that conversion, I believe, happens in the duodenum, which is fully bypassed in RNY, so you want to kep an eye on your A level from becoming deficient.
