I am 20 weeks pregnant  and 14 months out from my DS. At my last OB visit I had lost another 4 lbs. I am not in the least bit concerned about the thought of gaining weight. I have upped my carbs and generally eat what sounds good still concentrating on protein and my vitamins of course. My ob had a fit! He seems to think I am intentionally loosing weight for fear of gaining all of my weight back. I have stressed the fact that i am NOT at all concerned that this pregnancy will bring on the 140 + lb I have lost. In fact I am making a conscious effort to snack More often. I feel like i literally eat all day long. My ultra sound at 19 weeks showed a VERY healthy little GIRL! Weighing about 9.5 oz. Which even the Dr. Says is perfect for now.  He refuses to hear anything at all about how the DS is any different from the RNY said it doesn't matter which surgery i had. Which may or may not be true. He wants a food log. And has said he is more afraid that I am starving and that the baby is taking everything from me. I'm just stumped. I really didn't think 4 lb was that big of a deal. maybe it isn't, This is my 4th pregnancy I gained over 100 lb with my first 12 with my second and 18 with my 3rd. Now all of those i was obese. And any weight loss was a non issue.

So Any thoughts on this? I mean should I be just as worried as my Dr? I have lost a total of 13 lb this pregnancy. I am also just barely a year out from surgery. Is my Dr. just thinking ahead as to what could happen? Or am i not seeing the seriousness of the situation. Honestly i am feeling kind of lost. Pregnancy after DS is alien to me!

I lost 12 pounds in my first trimester alone. My OB is not at all concerned; neither is my PCP. If baby is measuring normal and growing, and your nutritional levels are okay (have you had any labs run?), then I think your doc is freaking out for no reason. I am assuming you did not start out your pregnancy UNDER a normal weight - that would be the only time I would think his reactions are warranted (starting underweight and continuing to lose).

I would ask your bari surgeon to give you lab orders to run the full battery of vite levels.  Have the results sent to both your bari doc and your OB with a copy to yourself.  Then the OB can see what your vite levels are including your protein levels.  Blood tests do not lie!  That will show your OB that you're not starving yourself.  He obviously does not fully understand the DS at all - the DS is a LOT more malabsorptive than the RNY and people can lose weight a lot faster with the DS than RNY.  I do understand his concern though.  So for peace of mind, I would definitely have your vite labs run very soon.  Good luck!

I just replied on the other weight gain thread too but I am currently 37 weeks pregnant and a little over 14 months post op from my DS. I have lost a total of about 35 lbs since finding out i was pregnant. Just this last week i gained back 1 lb. The baby is totally on track growth wise. We have done a growth ultrasound every 4 weeks since 20 weeks and each time she has grown just how she should and measures within normal range for her gestational age. At my last ultrasound @ 36 weeks she was estimated at just under 6 lbs which puts her on track to weigh right around the same birth weight has my older daughter who was born long before my WLS.

I do eat a lot more carbs being pregnant than i would otherwise to keep myself out of ketosis early on i really had to focus on adding carbs into my diet. Once the baby comes I will be cutting back on carbs again to finish my weight loss.

It really sounds like your dr. has no clue what a DS is and how it works. Even if you are eating a lot more than usual the likelihood you will gain the "normal" amount of pregnancy weight is very small. I make sure i get in all my vitamins. I make sure i get in all my protein. I do eat some extra carbs like i said but i definitely do not overeat. We have checked my labs several times and the only one i struggle with is my vitamin d, but that would probably be the case pregnant or not. My midwife has been great about understand how my surgery works and has had absolutely no concerns with my weight loss, as long as baby grows well that's what matters.

GOOD LUCK!
