Clomid & Metformin
This will likely border on an overload of information but I'm hoping for some "been there done that" advice. I'm 31 years old and have been trying to get pregnant since April. Until last month, my ovulation was dead on regular - thentwo months ago - zilch. We're tracking with Clear Blue Not So Easy. Lab work suggested my iron had dropped incredibly and I spent a month working on that. Iron levels are back up and good and my OB-Gyn has prescribed Clomid & Metformin. Low dose of Clomid to start, of course. My only medical history other than the RNY is left side tubal torsion , removed tube kept ovary. My period is absolutely regular - no exceptions, no pain, nothing abnormal. My HSG was normal for the right side.
Has anyone had success on Metformin & Clomid, having not had success prior? I've not been diagnosed with PCOS and every test I've had done has suggested I do not have it but my OB-Gyn insists it could simply not be presenting in a classical way and that its a broad diagnosis. I'm really, really, really hopeful. Any advice or suggestions from anyone?

i'm sorry you are struggling to get pregnant. I had an ectopic pregnancy this past summer and am left with only one tube as well. I have PCOS and am on metformin and I am at the end of my third cycle of clomid. Clomid is giving me stronger ovulations than I was having without it. However, only having one tube it cuts the chance of getting pregnant in half :( I just met with a fertility specialist and I will be moving onto injectable fertility drugs next cycle in hopes of ovulating a couple eggs on each ovary. I would recommend meeting with a fertility specialist. Having one tube can make it take a lot longer o get pregnant, especially if you have any other issues like PCOS. However, I have read about many women who seem to get pregnant right away even with one tube so you never know. Good luck to you!
I have PCOS and the Metformin is the best thing out there that will help. Last year, before surgery, my husband and I were going through fertility treatments. The Clomid did help me with the ovulation, but I kept getting cycst from my eggs that wouldn't clear the tube. We're are hoping to start trying again next year, and pray the cyst don't continue.
I was put on metformin even though I am not PCOS. It has been shown to help slightly with egg quality and most definitely help with women who suffer early losses. It really doesn't hurt even if you aren't insulin resistant. It just optimizes the insulin you produce (even if it is already working ok).
If after a few months of clomid don't work to get you ovulating again, ask your doctor about femara. It works for many women when clomid doesn't.

I had success with just Clomid alone. We had tried for 8 years. Our MD said we would try Clomid for 5 months, if no success then would add Metformin.....I don't have a diagnosis of PCOS, but often overweight people have some insulin resistance which can impair ovulation. I got pregnant on my fourth cycle with clomid, so we didn't have to do Metformin too. Good luck!
