Ok..Im pregnant and hoping to breastfeed...for the life of me I can't get a lactation consultant to awnser any questions relating to RNY and breastfeeding....so I have been looking here for information...I went out today and bought some fenugreek and mothers milk tea...my question is how do you take the fenugreek and how often and same with the tea....My first son,pre-op..did NOT breastfeed...my milk supply was low..and that was pre-op...so Im a little worried I will have the same problem this time. Plus I am having a c-section and if I remember correctly it takes longer for your milk to come in after a C-section....any tips, advice on how to get it to come in asap? Also how to take the tea and the capsules...Thank you, any information is greatly appreciated!!

There are different theories on how much of the fenugreek to take.  The health food store said 2 twice.  I started with 2, 3 times per day and didn't get as much of an increase as I wanted so my lactation specialist told me to up it to 3, 3 times per day.  Seemed to do the trick for me.

I think you need to see what works best for you.

I do remember reading somewhere that you should not take fenugreek while pregnant, so check on that if you are planning to take it while still pregnant....

I had RNY and I read somewhere that we don't absorb capsules...do you know if we are supposed to take them apart?

I did not break them apart.  I may have read something like that as well, but it seemed to work for me.  I had RNY as well.  I know the tender iron I am taking from vitalady come in capsules and they seem to be working well for me too.  Good luck, breastfeeding was so rewarding for me.  My son is 6 months old now and I only do it couple times per day so I miss it.

Also, my multivitamins from celebrate comes in capsules and they are made specially for weight loss patients.....

If you look at my post a couple down from yours, you will get some good advice! As far as the fenugreek and the tea....I was told by a lactation consultant to take 3 fenugreek capsules 3 times a day.....I've bee opening the capsules and adding it to my tea with a little bit of honey and I actually enjoy it! I was also told to eat oatmeal, brown rice & barley. Also a beer a day.....but that would be my last resort!

Google the recipe for "lactation cookies". I swear by them. I baked probably 7 dozen of them after haivng my second daughter. I could tell a huge difference when I ate them and when I didn't. They have all sorts of good stuff in them (almond meal, flaxseed, oatmeal, etc). One of the ingredients is brewer's yeast, so it's the beer without the alcohol ;)

I do recommend that if you make them, add the full bag of chocolate chips (I also did butterscotch chips in some and tried chocolate chips with dried cranberries in others for variety) and store them in the freezer. They taste MUCH better straight from the freezer. They do have a bit of a beer taste. I'm not a beer drinker, so coming right out of the freezer worked better for me because it dulled that beer flavor.

Good luck!

I was on just about every kind of supplement, and medicine possible to increase my supply.  I did the Mother's Milk tea three times a day, had oatmeal with 1tsp of fenugreek powder three times a day and took domperidone.  Unfortunately I never produced enough to exclusively breast feed and my DD never latched so I pumped for 3 months.   I do know it all helped because within days of stopping everything I couldn't pump any at all.

However, if you want an less expensive method for the fenugreek, they sell the powder by the bag full at asian markets.  I bought a large (14oz) for under $3.00.  Fenugreek by itself though has a very strong, bitter flavor.  I went through more splenda and SF syrup while I was using it than ever before.
