I am 13 months out and I was told I had to wait at least 18 months out from surgery to try and get pregnant...I think 5 months will come soon but I still have not reached goal I need another 20 to 30 pounds to lose but Ive pretty much stopped losing at 8 months...I think the rest will come off with extra extra excersise...my father is 76 years old and very ill, we are not sure if he will make it through this illness so I have been stressing and not taking any of my vitamins my thyroid pill or any protein aside from what I eat for the last 3 weeks...I was good on all my vitamins except the calcium that I kept forgetting...I would take only one dose and forget the other 2....my one year post op came and went and my bariatric nurse forgot to schedule me for my one year appoinment it is now scheduled for Dec 8th...I dont think my blood work will be very good even if I start back on my vitamins asap...also my question is this I am 42 years old and I currently have no health issues that I had before surgery my blood pressure is gone and my diabetes is gone...I only take a thyroid pill for low thyroid...and I might have a hernia but other than that no other health issues...if I get pregnant next March or April I will be 43 on June 11th of next year....am I to old to try for my first baby?? I didnt meet my first boyfriend and now  fiance until the ripe old age of 36 and we have been together ever since...I was so insecure my whole life to want to be with anybody even with him but he is the only man that ever looked past my weight and saw me for me....he has loved me big and bigger and now smaller and to him none of my weight issues where issues for him....but he does want to be a dad real bad and even though i never thought I would have kids because I never saw my white night on the horizon the time is now but I'm afraid maybe my time to have babies has passed :(

 HI,

I think at the age of 42 you need to start moving forward on this project sooner rather then later.   The chances of a natural conception are pretty low at your age, but with ferility intervention there is still a chance.

I think you should start finding out about fertility docs in your area. Make an appointment so  you can get your testing started (I just did the testing and it took 12 weeks because it had to be timed with my period.) Tell your surgeon what is going on and I bet he would give you the green light to get started.

Start back on your vitamins right away,  your body has a store of vitamins so your levels may not be that bad, but you need to build that store back up.

good luck,

CNC

you need to get your self as healthy as you can be before you start to make a baby... the baby will take alot from you, including your remaining vitiman sources and that will leave you depleated..your thyroid should be stable as well...

Like Catnip and Lexi said, you need to be aggressive at your age but you need to be in optimum health too.  I just turned 40 this past Tuesday and my doc's are being really aggressive with us. We were told after the age of 40 there is a 5% chance of a natural conception.

I'm of the opinion it's never too late to try.  But, you've got to get things straight first.... get the vits back on track, blood worked checked, thyroid too, especially if you've been missing meds!!  Also, you need to start on folic acid!

I'm 41 and carrying what will be my 3rd baby.  I've been very fortunate with fertility.  Both of my kids were conceived pre RNY with no help and this one was conceived 6 weeks following a misscarriage.

Statistically, the chances are less, but if it's what you want, don't let statistics dissuade you from having a baby!

Best of luck to you!!

While I totally agree with what everyone else has said - get back on your vits and thyroid meds, get your labs done - then talk to your drs...but as for very low chance of getting pg at your age...not necessarily.  I'm 43 years old and have been pregnant 6 times since right before I turned 40...5 of them natural pregnancies, one of them IUI.  Unfortunately they've all been miscarriages, and initially the drs were chalking them all up to my age...but after so many of them and a lot of blood work, they now believe that they're do to three genetic blood clotting mutations I have.  Two of them I've been able to have genetic testing on...one was 'normal' one was not (and I knew that one was not going to be - it was a blighted ovum).

Anyways...my point is...do get yourself to the healthiest point possible, get your drs on board, and don't give uphope...it is very possible at 43 years of age to get pregnant, naturally.  I would tell you to get an RE though...but don't get one that immediately jumps up and down on on the IVF train...not that I'd rule it out, but it's not the 'only' solution out there for someone 'our' age.

Best of luck.

Don't give up hope! A very good friend of mine was told she was to old to have kids and everyone thought she was crazy for even trying. She has had 2 beautiful, healthy, perfect kids after the age of 41! Anything's possible!
Like the others have said, get yourself as healthy as possible, make sure your blood work is good and talk to your Drs!

I agree w/everyone.  Work with your OB and your bari surgeon.  I'm 41 and just got pg through IVF.  My baby will be born about a month before my 42nd birthday.  My OB wanted me to start TTC sooner rather than later.  I got the early approval from my bari surgeon at 15 mos post op to start TTC.  That was a year ago and now I'm finally pregnant.  it does take time.  But at our age, it certainly is not impossible, it just takes us getting more agressive with the process than the youngins in their 20's and 30s.

Good luck to you!

Hey... i just noticed your bari surgeon is Dr. McHawtie at SSF Kaiser.  A couple of my friends saw him too.  I'm in San Jose and run WLS support groups down here.  Where in the bay area are you?

I just wanted to say I am almost 11 weeks pregnant and I am 42.  I am 1 yr out from a sleeve.  This was a BIG suprise!  We went through YEARS of infertility treatments to ave my son who is now 5 1/2, then my twins who are 4. We were told because of male and female issues we wouldn't be able to conceive naturally...   Then at age 42, believing we were all done... we got this big suprise!   LOL  We are very excited but still pretty shocked!!!  There are some increased genetic risks to older mom pregnancies, but the odds are still in your favor.   I do think talking to a reproductive endocrinologist sooner than later is a good idea!  Just don't lose hope!!!  Good luck to you!   Amy
