Pregnancy after VSG
Hey ladies!
I'm new here and have some questions!
I have chosen to have VSG in March, and I definitely want more children someday.
For those of you who have had VSG--can you tell me what your pregnancy experience was like following surgery? Did you make it to goal before getting pregnant? How much weight did you gain during pregnancy? I guess since I gained SO much weight with my 2nd pregnancy (60 lbs!) and the weight continued to pile on afterward, I'm worried about the same thing happening again. Is your restriction different when your pregnant? Do you still have restriction after the baby is born?
Aaaah! So many questions, I know. Sorry :-)
Thanks,
Jen

I had VSG last August. By 6 months out I was almost at goal, my labs were great, and my restriction was starting to stabilize. My husband and I decided to let nature do its thing as far as deciding when to have our next baby, and about a second later I was pregnant. I am now 34 weeks pregnant. I've had a very easy and uneventful pregnancy. So far I've gained about 15 lbs and I'm hoping to stay below 20. Neither my OB nor my surgeon has had any sleeve related concerns with my pregnancy and the baby is growing right on track. As for how the restriction changes after pregnancy, I obviously don't know yet, but I'm pretty sure that it has lessened during my pregnancy (and I'm hoping it will return after delivery). Overall, I'm super happy with my decision to have the sleeve as well as the timing of this pregnancy. Good luck with your surgery!
I'm 28 months out from VSG and 35 weeks pregnant.
VSG has not complicated my pregnancy at all. My restriction is the same. The main changes have been the increase in head hunger and cravings. I've gained 25lbs which is right on target to what the doctors have suggested I gained. I was over 19 months out when I popped positive. We were cleared at 8 months post-VSG because my labs were great, I was below goal, and my age plus my husband was facing a looming deployment. I don't foresee any issues with restriction after delivery, and I plan on going right back to my normal maintenance eating once I deliver. I might low carb it again to lose the weight faster, but we'll see how much I lose immediately following delivery.
I know a couple of VSG patients who gained more, and then there is the fabulous Paula who has gained less.
I didn't want to get pregnant before hitting goal. Plus, I wanted to make sure my body had stabilized somewhat and I could consume enough food to support my body and a developing baby.

"fabulous Paula"? I hope that was not sarcastic! :) I think the important thing to highlight here is that with the sleeve we've both been able to gain right within the guidelines for our starting weight. I was still technically overweight when getting pregnant, so I "should" gain 15-25 lbs according to reccomendations. Since you were maintaining at a normal weight when you got pregnant, you'd fall into the 25-40 lbs category. I'd say that makes us both a success! Now I just look forward to seeing the scale go down again!! Pretty soon these little ones will be here!

Thanks! I'm just a sarcastic person, so I tend to hear that when I'm reading online :) And don't worry, I've done my fair share of napping this pregnancy. The benefit of living with a 2 year old who takes a 3 hour nap every day means that I can ensure at least an hour nap during that time! I just hope I can train the baby to be as good of a sleeper!!!
I feel like we were just posting that we were expecting, I can't believe we're at the end already!

I had VSG about 20 months ago. I am about 22 weeks along. I haven't gained any weight, but baby is doing fabulously! I also have noticed more restriction since getting pregnant. I am back to eating about what I was right after I had surgery. My OBGYN thinks I'll be able to finish the pregnancy with out gaining any weight. She is adamant that she doesn't want to undo my hard work and still keep our little girl healthy.
