This has probably been asked before but I can't go through these millions of posts to find the answer soooo: RNY'ers does anyone regret having the surgery or would you do it all over again? & Ladies that had PCOS pre-op: Did having the surgery and losing the weight make the PCOS go away? Because I'm definitely wanting to get pregnant after surgery (I know I have to wait 18 months) but before I even started thinking about surgery my fiance and I had been trying to conceive for 4 years, no luck!

First off, everyone's body is different.  I'll tell you what happen to me.  Yes, I would have the surgery again in a heart beat.  I wish  I could have it again now to lose the last 30 or 40 pounds. lol  I do have PCOS.  Even after surgery, I really didn't have a period.  Three years out without trying I got pregnant.  Ethan came and I never had a period.  7 months after Ethan was born and on bc, I came up pregnant again.  After Malachi was born, still no period.  5 months after Malachi was born, I became pregnant again with Christian.  After he was born, 1 period.  I got my tubes tied for medical issues and since then, I have had 3 periods.  But there are some on here that are still having issues getting pregnant.  We never tried to get pregnant with any of them.  It just happened.  But that is not everyone's story.  It really depends on your body.  Good luck and I hope it all works out for you.

I'm 7.5 years post-op and have NO regrets whatsoever of having the surgery!  I never had issues with PCOS so I can't speak on that subject.  I do however know that woman become very VERY fertile (many of which had PCOS) after having surgery to the point that it's recommended you use 2 forms of birth control.  However, does that mean it's the case for everyone.....NO.....there are several woman on this board that still have problems with PCOS and getting pregnant.  So no-one can tell you for sure if you will get pregnant without even trying or if you will continue to have problems.  I would highly suggest if you do have surgery to take all measures to not get pregnant until you are at least 12-18 months post-op.  If you have a birth control mishap early on, I would suggest you take the morning after pill to make sure you don't unexpectedly get pregnant.  Having the surgery would put you in much better health and give you the chance to have a healthy pregnancy.  I don't see what you have to loose!

I had PCOS prior to having the surgery. I didn't have a period on my own for over 3 years before my surgery. My doctor told me that I would never have children unless I lost weight. I had the surgery, lost about 40 lbs the first month and got my period the next month! All PCOS symptoms have since resolved after over 100lbs lost. As for my fertility....Well I got pregnant with my son while on the depo provera shot!My doctor suspects it was a faulty vial of the drug?  Now I am pregnant again after trying for 2 months. I have no residual effects from the PCOS. Having the surgery is a MAJOR decision. It's not as easy as people think. I never lost the rest of my weight after getting pregnant with my son. I also ended up on a vent for nearly a week after my surgery after they knicked my trachea intubating me for the surgery.  I have absolutely NO regrets, but it is not a decision to take lightly. Take care and I wish you the best of luck!

I have to agree that everyone's story and body are differnt. I had severe PCOS and was told that children would not be possible without fertility treatment even when I wasn't severly overweight..I was diagnosed when I was 19. I had my RNY in 2007. I lost over 100lbs and was healthier than ever. However, no period and still PCOS. Fast forward to 3 years post op and I found out I was pregnant...even without having a period. I never even knew I had ovulated. I had my son on February 27, 2011 at 39 weeks with a c-section and a tubal ligation. That being said, I went about 15 weeks post baby and had to take a round of bc to get my first period. It came and went and for the past 3 months I have had a consecutive period every 29-32 days...shocker! Not sure if I will stay regular or if the PCOS has subsided, but after surgery it still reared it's ugly head and brough about infertility issues even after the weight loss.

Hi Kara,

I am 8 years post op as of this August. I had PCOS before surgery, and continued to have it after my surgery and a weight loss of 130 lbs and goal. My cycle was regulated with either Birth Control or Provera and Metformin. We waited abotu 2.5 years after my surgery to try and conceive. We tried a year on our own with no luck and then saw my ob/gyn and tried Clomid, still no luck, and finally went to a specialist. After about 8 months with the help of medication treatment we were able to conceive our son...he turns 4 next month! To date, I still have PCOS and issues with my cycle. We have been TTC on our own, no luck, but will go back to the specialist after the first of the year if no luck. So, although still have the PCOS, I was assured not having the added weight made treating my other issues much easier not to mention a healthier pregnancy. I would definitely do everything over again, if not sooner! Hope that helps. :-)
