I was able to NOT for the first year after surgery... Otherwise I did NOT when I was home or eating at work. If we were out and about, it was inevitable I felt...
2 and a half years out, I still do not eat with my meals at home - but I don't sit and relax over them most times either. They are simply not usually social events for us most nights. So it is easier...
That said the dietician I have to see for being diabetic when I am pregnant is in awe of only two things I have done after RNY - not drinking with meals at home, and I still have not had my first soda since surgery! She said she has never seen anyone keep those rules this long...

I will maybe take a few sips with my meals every so often, but I usually wait at least a half hour or hour before I will full on drink a glass of water. Now with snacks or a small amount of food (like a few grapes for example), I will drink right after because it's not a big amount of food that I feel will stretch my stoma out when it washes the food out of my stomach when I drink. I really miss drinking with my meals though and I am 3 yrs out.... but I wasn't a big drinker with my meals before surgery though, so it's not a way big deal for me!
