Glucose tolerance test
Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone had experience with the glucose tolerance test after gastric bypass. My OB said she has had bypass pts do it and have tolerated it fine. I am really nervous to do it or even worse the 3 hour test that I did have to do with my first.
How have you tolerated it? or what did you do as an alternate.
Thanks

I'm going to get a prescription for test strips and just monitor my glucose levels myself at home. I'll keep track of fasting, pre-meal, and 60-, 90-, and 120-minute post-prandials. I will refuse the usual glucose tolerance test.
I will have to monitor my sugars at home....I had GD with my last 2 pregnancies....my OB told me that even though I had RNY.....more than likely I will have GD with this (as it's different then Type II diabetes).....so we're going to skip the test and go straight to monitoring and go from there.
I dump on 14grams of sugar.....like, feeling like i"m having a heart attack, while puking....DUMPING.....I told her I wouldn't even attempt the test.

I called my bariatric surgeon about this when I was pregnant with my third (post op) and he said for them to do a Hemoglobin A1C test instead of the GTT. The drink is 50 gms of sugar for the GTT and I probably would dump and get really sick, so I was either going to skip the GTT or find another test they could do. The HA1C worked great and no sugary drink!
I had to take my 1st test early because of my hypoglycemia. I monitor all of my sugars at home but still did the test because they thought I was heading towards gestational diabetes. My ob had me eat 20 Brach's jellybeans and my A1c was 47 when the normal range is 75-140. I still have to do my next test at 28 weeks and they said if I pass that one I don't have to take the 3 hour test. I did dump with the hellybean test but not as much as I would have the drink.
I pretty much refused to do it, and I have VSG with zero dumping issues. In my normal, every day life, I rarely consume 75gr of sugar, why would chugging 75gr of sugar give accurate results? At least that was my thought-process.
So, I monitored my levels at home for 2 weeks with my ob in full agreement. I did fasting, and tested 2 hours after every meal. My numbers were fabulous. I didn't change my eating habits, or the foods I was eating during that time. I just couldn't wrap my head around the glucose test being accurate for me. Plus, I have weird transit time with my sleeve, and I wasn't willing to risk inaccurate results.
