Good Morning/Afternoon,

We are in the process of researching how to have a healthy pregnancy, and I am a little worried about my use of anti-depressants.

I live in Canada and use Cipralex, I am not sure if it is under the same name in the US. Could you tell me about your concerns or if there were none.

I am a little worried if I go off of them.

I have started to talk to my doctor about this, but would the opinions of others as well.

Cheers,
Carrie

Cipralex is most commonly known as Lexapro in the states.  Talk to your doctor about his/her thoughts on this.  I'll give you my 2 cents although I'm not an MD, I'm an NP, but  I've also been in the same situation.

The anti depressent best studies longitudinally ( studeied throughout pregnancy and then throughtout the exposed childs childhood) is Prozac (fluoxetine)  It's been on the market longest of all the SSRI's.  MOST (not all) OB/Gyns and the literature consider it safe though there is some debate as to whether it may be linked with 1st trimester miscarriage and with nursing problems.  (although, these are not good studies!!)

Personally, I took Prozac with my first 2 pregnancies, and nursed with both, with no problems whatsoever.  Both my psychiatrist and Obstetrician were on board with this decision....

It's a hard decision. With this (my now 6th pregnancy, 3 miscarried)  I've chosen not to take my fluoxetine or anything because my last 2 pregnancies ended in miscarriage, I'm 41, and I refused to take any risk whatsoever this time...   (that being said, the risk is miniscule, I'm just being paranoid)

My best advice is talk with your obstetrician and with whomever prescribed your cipralax.  I was on cipralax in between my daughter and son and was told to change back to fluoxetine when I discovered I was pregnant with my son for safety reasons....  Cipralax worked by far best for me... but I managed without too much trouble.

I wish you the best of luck with your decision.  Inform yourself well, talk with all your docs and make the decision that is best for you!!

exactly what linda said.. there are a few "Safer" medications out there..prozac and zoloft being 2 of them... i really believe that a mama of "sound mind" is in far better shape then a depressed frazzled one... good luck!

I don't know much about this... I had been on Prozac for about 5 years when I decided it was not working and I made an appointment with my primary care doctor and asked her to change my anti depressant... She prescribed a new one and it made me nauseous and sick - I thought!  When I quit taking it and 4 days later was still not feeling better, a HUGE wow moment happened, I realized I just might be pregnant...    After tests confirmed it and I talked to both her and my OB they suggested Zoloft, but I have chosen NOT to take anything at this point and my just struggling along.

Zoloft is the suggested one for my OB, BUT lately I keep seeing commercials for a class action lawsuit about parents who were on Zoloft with children with birth defects...

Everyone is different, every OB is different, but with the help of your PCP and GYN you should be able to come up with a plan YOU can live with....

Good Luck!

I had the same concerns! I am bipolar and was taking several meds. When we decided to start TTC I did tons of research and asked a million questions to my psych and my other Drs about the risks involved! First my ob put me on extra folic acid, then I started weaning off the other meds because they weren't safe to take while pregnant.
The one I stayed on was Prozac! It's known to be one of the safest to take while pregnant. I was worried because I had heard about the chance of it not being as safe as some think. I wanted to try going without any of it but my Drs were concerned about me having a major depressive episode. I have a double depression diagnosis and am prone to severe episodes and we wanted to prevent that yet be as safe as possible! There's no telling how pregnancy will affect someone with depression. Some have had an improvement during pregnancy and the hormones have balanced them out and some have had a hard time managing their depression.
It's good to be thinking about this before pregnancy so you're better prepared going into it! Lots of research and questions! If you're going to switch meds try to do it before you get pregnant so you're able to know if it'll work for you.
Good luck and I hope you get the answers you need and are able to have a healthy pregnancy!

Well, here's my two cents: I took wellbutrin with my twins and had no problems at all. Prozac and Zoloft do not work for me, and there are some studies on the safeness of wellbutrin. I took one pill every two days. I have more anxiety than depression, and the anxiety flared quite a bit at the lower dose, but it was good enough to get me through. Good luck!

Effective parenting tips may be learned from books, websites and also medical professionals. Additional safety information for pregnant women is to avoid medications that might harm your baby like antidepressant Zoloft. Affected patients have been filing Zoloft birth defects lawsuit against its manufacturer because of the damages it caused them.
