Watcha Cravin'?
Jilly,
I know everyone has a different way of dealing with all this. I don't give in to every craving either. Luckily for me I can only eat one peice of pizza (I don't have the attitude that pizza is the enemy) and my other craving of cucumbers is actually a really good thing (0: I do similar things to what you do. If I want chocolate, I will eat a 90 calorie fiber one bar or brownie and that does the trick most of the time (plus helps with other issues). I was just saying I don't deny every craving because, I know for me, if I do, I will eventually just gorge on everything in a moment of weakness, so moderation is the motto I live by when it comes to food and it really seems to work for me. Believe me, there are some cravings I HAVE to say no to because I know they would just make me really sick. I have to say though, I don't agree that giving into a craving here or there will do your baby a huge disservice. Yes, if you give in to every craving (if they're all bad) then yes, it is a disservice. We need to make healthy choices for our sake and our baby's. If this is the attitude you need to take to make your diet work for you, then I totally understand. Just like i know myself enough to know that being that rigid would just make me fail, you probably know yourself enough to know that the rigidity is exactly what you need to succeed. I just think it's a little extreme to say that giving in now and then would be terrible. Also, please make sure you eat carbs! Your baby needs them! I am not saying any of this to upset you or anything, I enjoy hearing different points of view. I just wanted to know what you were craving. I wasn't trying to make this a debate of any kind (:
Good luck with your pregnancy.

I wasn't debating anyone or anything - just saying what I do. To me, it's not "rigid" because the more I ignore the cravings, the fewer cravings I have (just like without pregnancy), so it becomes a non-issue.
Also, no, baby does not need carbs. Despite LOTS of searching, all I've found is random claims that ketosis during pregnancy is dangerous, but NOTHING to actually support that claim. However, I HAVE found lots of anecdotal evidence of women who have gone through pregnancy both on a low-carb diet and not, and pregnancies on a low-carb diet tend to include less nausea, less morning sickness, less edema, fewer cravings (maybe this is also part of why the cravings thing isn't such a huge deal for me), and more energy. And I have found zero even anecdotal claims of babies born to mothers who low-carbed who had any sort of brain damage (which is usually the claim of those who say ketosis is so scary).
Because I've not eaten starchy carbs (grains, starchy veggies, etc.) for so long, they now make me feel like crap - I get bloated and painful gas pains for hours afterwards. Carbs also affect glucose levels and, therefore, insulin levels, and high insulin levels during pregnancy have been linked with increased risk of the child to have diabetes later in life.
So, consider me "rigid" if you will, but for me, it's working so far :)

Wow! Sometimes I really hate message boards because I think people really misunderstand eachother! I kinda felt attacked by your first comment and it appears you felt attacked by mine. I don't think either of us intended that. Rigidity is not a bad thing to me, I wish I could do it, but I can't. So I'm sorry if you read what I was saying as an attack, I just felt the need to explain about myself because I felt you had attacked me. Sorry about that, I probably should have left well enough alone. I truly believe that everyone has a different way of dealing with their weight issues and I like hearing about what everyone does. But I also acknowledge the fact that pretty much everyone thinks their way is the "right" way (even if they won't admit it to themselves) so we all feel the need to defend ourselves. I should not have risen to the occasion.
Truly, I just meant this post to be a fun thing for people to say the weird things they were craving and I am a little sad that it turned into this. I was just trying to have fun. I have been really stressed out lately and needed a little outlet.
I am leaving it at this and won't reply again. Just, please know that I didn't mean to offend you.
Tina
P.S. All I know about ketosis is what I've read on this site so I'm sure you're right.

I usually try to make it clear that I'm expresing what works for ME and never say that everyone else should do it my way or anything like that, so I apologize if it came across that way. It's certainly not "my way or the WRONG way!" And there are some who are even stricter about what they eat than I am - it's all very individual.
I am having one of those "everyone and everything is stupid!" type of days, so I probably should refrain from posting anything on forums today :P

Meli~while you are pregnant, you will listen to your body. IF your body is craving it, there is a darn good reason why it is. Not so much the carbs like in chips etc or potatoes etc..the carbs are sugar. When your pregnant your body is spending up so much energy and it needs that little extra boost. DONT deny your cravings, there is a reason why you are with that specific item...me with the gummy things, it was the sugar. Also had a craving for lemon water. My other craving which was weird this last time, i craved DT a&w root beer..that was the only pop id have a couple of drinks with etc.
I was worried about my starch craving, my dr's told me that was normal, and wy more normal when people have had weightloss surgery. Pregnancy an excuse to eat what you want? yep, sure is! as long as it is in moderation.

I'm constantly craving salty food or citrus. I've been adding a ton of salt to everything I eat, lol. Other than eating a donut (the only thing I didn't throw up in 5 days), I have been doing as always and finding substitutions for carby cravings. Usually some fruit makes me happy when I want dessert, and a few whole wheat crackers with cheese take care of it. If not, I'll eat a bite and I'm good!
