Trying to Get Pregnant...

I am just about 18 months out from my RNY surgery and am starting to think about trying to get pregnant.  For those of you who have gone through a pregnancy post op, could you please give me an idea of what changed for you in your daily routine (i.e. extra vitamins, fluids, food, calories).  Where there things that you weren't allowed to eat/drink?  Were you able to use splenda?  Just trying to get my head around what changes I'm going to have to make if we are able to conceive.  Thanks.

i replaced my multi with a prenatal... i was 4 years out so my eating really hasnt changed..i added some carbs to make sure i stayed out of ketosis... there is ton of info on foods to avoid but not because of rny- just because of risks they may have or not have... its really a personal decision what you eat as far as those items... lunch meat being one of them.. splenda is fine... everything in moderation!... good luck

I'm only in my first trimester, but I did not switch my regular multi to a prenatal because my regular multi actually has MORE folic acid than the prenatal I compared it to at the store. All I did was add a DHA supplement (2 big pills per day).

I've actually been eating LESS so far because of the nausea and major changes in appetite and tastes. My doc says it's fine, that lots of women don't gain (or even lose some weight, which is my case) in the first trimester.

Splenda is deemed to be safe, but as a personal decision, I am avoiding artificial sweeteners (as well as soy). That is up to you what you want to do there.

Things you're not "allowed" to eat/drink are also really a personal decision. Me, I don't like taking risks, so I skip caffeine, sushi, undercooked eggs, and do microwave my lunchmeat. Some women prefer to eat what they wish and think the risks of some of these things are so small that it's not worth the inconvenience to avoid them.

Unlike others, I am NOT adding in additional carbs to my diet - yet another personal decision. Humans had babies who survived just fine for thousands of years in areas with very sparse vegetation; not to mention carbs make me gassy, and I'm already dealing with enough!

You won't know what you'll do until you get there. I know it's hard not to try to plan ahead, but you really won't know how you'll feel until it happens to you. I thought giving up Diet Pepsi was going to be the most difficult thing for me to do, but one of the ways I thought I might be pregnant was that my tastes changed - so much so that I went from at least a liter of Diet Pepsi per day to being completely repulsed by it, and haven't had a drop in two weeks now!
