Update to Hospital stay post

I posted last week I was in the hosptial for 8 days with severe abdominal pain.  I finally saw my bariatric surgeon, who knew exactly what was wrong with me.  I have a partial bowel obstruction where my bowel meets my pouch, so when food tries to leave, I'm left in horrific pain.  I'm glad to have a definite diagnosis, but since it's only a partial obstruction and I'm in my 3rd trimester, they can't repair it until I give birth.  It may resolve on its own once I deliver, but the surgeon stated it might not.  He said my OB will have to manage my pain because he does bypasses, not babies.

I saw my OB on Monday and they wanted me to see the GI doctor, who agreed with the surgeon's diagnosis.  He also deferred to my OB for pain management and then brought up TPN.  They weighed me the last day I was in the hosptial and I weighted 299.  I knew I had retain a lot of fluid so I wasn't worried.  At my 25 week appt, I weighed 290.  When I weighed in at the GI I had lost 6 lbs and I'm still dropping weight, about 2lbs a day.  I'm now down to 280 as of this morning.  My pre-pregnancy weight was 270.  He said if my OB thinks I'm dropping weight too fast, that he would recommend TPN until I give birth.

I'm really frustrated because I do want to eat and I want to eat much more than I am.  I can only eat if I take my pain meds when I eat, which right now is about 2x a day.  I can't eat very much or I will throw it up.  My pain meds have tylenol in them, so I can't take it any more frequently than I am or I risk overdosing on the tylenol. I know if they put me on TPN that it is for the baby and I will do anything and everything to make sure she's healthy, but TPN scares me.

I will try to keep you updated, but since the pain meds also make me sleepy, I sleep all day.

I am sorry to hear you are in pain hun! But I bet you are happier knowing what is causing it. Did they suggest a liquid/soft diet? It should cause less pain. I hope you don't have to move to TPN but if it comes to that just remind yourself it is for your little one. Being sleepy might be a blessing. Help you get through the pain. You are nearing the end. You can do it!
