Toddler Weight Questions and Mysterious Illness:HELP

So, just curious as to how much your toddler weighs? Emad will be 4 (wow) in October. Prior to getting this illness...he was at about 34 lbs....which was a gain as he was at 32 lbs before we went on our trip to Morocco this past month. Anyhow, now that he has been sick he is down to 30 lbs. He is about 3.5 ft tall. Granted he is a lanky kid but he just seems to stay at the same weight. I checked his records and he has really only gained about  4 lbs in the past 2 years? Guess it could be the opposite. Both hubby and I were skinny kiddos as well so maybe it is just genes? Anyhow, just wanted some feedback.

As for the illness, so we were in Morocco for a month. Just got back last Wed. On the flight from Germany to Chicago, all of which prior to Emad was fine, Emad started getting a really high fever and I notice his gums were red and swollen. He had a happy meal at the airport in Germany and nothing on the plane and snacks were all those I had packed which he had eaten the whole time while in Morocco. Anyhow, by the time we got of the plane he was gagging.retching and had a really high fever. I was scared it was foot.hand.mouth as they go on about it in customs at the airport or a reaction to something he ate or touched. Anyhow, we ended up missing our flight and spent the night in Chicago and then came home the next day. His fever was up and down over the next few days and his gums and tongue swelled more and got sores on his tongue. Saturday I took him to Urgent Care who tested for strep, negative, said not foot.hand.mouth cause his feet and hands were fine and no rash, and gave us an antibiotic and said follow up with pedi. So we did that Monday. He said it was/is likely a cold sore/fever blister that spread and since as of Monday, day  5, no more fever, no worries. In the meantime, Emad has lost 4 lbs, can only ea****er, bland juice, or yogurt, and maybe some plain mashed noodles. His gums now bleed some but swelling is down. We were told to rinse his mouth with a milk of magnesia/benadryl mix and apply orajel. He has been miserable and it is like having a newborn cause he is up at all hours of the night. If not better by tomorrow I may have to take him to dr again. His pedi is great but I feel like something is being missed here.
Any insight ladies?

Considering you've been traveling, I'm kind of surprised your doc is being so laid back about your son's illness.  Sounds to me like something worth more investigation!

As for the weight thing, my daughter is 2 1/2 and she weighs about 24 lbs fully dressed (with big bird in her hand, lol).  I think she was about 23 at her two year appointment. She is about 35 inches tall.  She is also quite skinny for her height which makes clothes shopping impossible!  Thank God for shorts season because she is wearing her 12 month shorts and capris from last summer, but when she needs long pants, she needs a 2T for length, but can't keep them up.  Oh how I wish I had such problems for myself, lol.  Anyway, I think it is pretty normal for them to gain just a few pounds a year by this age.

Hope you get some answers and that your son is doing better soon!

did they test him for a parasite? when jayson gets colds he does get sores in his mouth however not the gum bleeding... he has had hand/foot/mouth and that did include basically his whole body... jayson is pushing 40 lbs... so no help there... but my jaylyn is skinny lady and i worry about "keeping it healthy while pushing as many calories as possible"... shes 20 lbs at 15 months...

Nope, no tests other than the strep throat. Hopefully it is not a parasite. I am thinking the worst and hopefully it is not and is just cold sores.

As far as weight, my daughter just turned 4 in June and she is 38 pounds.  Sounds like he wasn't too far off before he got sick.

As far as the illness, about 5 years ago--a few months before I got pregnant with her, I started getting sores on my tongue.  It started as one or two, and they kept spreading.  I went to the dr, and they just gave me a rinse similar to what you are talking about with the milk of magnesia.  Finally after about another 2 weeks (!), I went back, mind you --I could barely eat...by then my entire tongue and cheeks were covered, and then they decided it was a case of viral herpes.  Somehow I had picked it up, so they treated me with a oral medication for the viral herpes, and it went away within a week.

Thankfully, I have never had it back.  As far as the swollen gums/bleeding--I don't remember that happening though.  It could have, I don't remember, I was in so much pain and was focusing on the sores on my tongue.

Just an idea.

Thanks Debbie! I am gonna give it another day to see if there is at least SOME improvement and if not head back to the doctor and request more tests. He is miserable and wants to eat but cant eat much if anything at all cause it hurts him. The pedi said cold sores but this seems extreme as it is gums and tongue.

Considering DS was about 30 pounds at 16 months, I can't help re average weight for a 4 year old....but he sounds around average to me, considering he's slim.

I would say take him back re the bleeding gums.  If it's not normal for him...then it needs to be re-checked.  Did they do blood work to check for infection?  I think it's the white cell count they check to see if there's an infection going on.  How are you feeling?  I know you had a fever for a few days, but is it gone now?  Any mouth problems with you?

My girls are 28 months and 35 lbs each.

I hope they figure out what going on with your kiddo. It's rough having a sick toddler.

Take him to the ER. as soon as you tell them you were overseas and all his symptoms, they will do more than just a strep test. it does sound like a parasite. Go and DEMAND test. dont sit quietly. Your child and you want answers. Im not nice when i get the run around of "oh wait and see", NO, there is no wait and see when it comes to my kids. Sounds like he could use some fluids.
