Metformin for PCOS during Pregnancy
Hi Ladies!
I am currently pregnant. I don't know when I'm due yet because of irregular periods but I have an appointment for a sonogram for accurate dating in just over two weeks. The first day of my last period was 6/2 but I had a negative test on 7/8, the positive came on 7/26. We weren't actively trying so I tested the first time because I felt weird and the second time because I woke up and just felt like I should test.
My PCP started me on Metformin for suspected PCOS in January and I had two menstural cycles on it before I found out that I'm pregnant.
The first OB I saw said right off the bat "You don't take that anymore" and didn't seem to want to discuss the reasons and research behind the decision. And he talked to me about it from a Diabetes point of view, it didn't seem like he realized that I was on it for PCOS, not Diabetes. He even had me take a 1hr Glucose Test (results not back yet) and a Hemoglobin A1C with Estimated avg. Glucose (which was normal).
Overall I was not happy with this OB and have made an appointment with one in a different city but that is not until the 17th. I came home from the first appointment and got onto PubMed and printed about 15 Abstracts from studies showing a protective effect from continuing the Metformin. So I guess my question is has anyone here gone through the same thing? Did you continue the Metformin through your pregnancy or did you stop?
I also don't know if I should keep the sonogram appointment with the doctor I don't like and then not see them again or cancel it and just do everything with the second doctor, but it's hard to pass up the opportunity to see our little one sooner rather than later!
Thanks in advance!

I took Metformin for PCOS (I wasn't diabetic then) to get pregnant with my first son (now 4 years old) and I was told to stop the Metformin once I got pregnant because it passes through the placenta to the baby... Later when I got gestational diabetes I took insulin for the same reason (Metformin passing to the baby). I think I would keep the appointment for the sonogram... Hope this helps & Congrats! :))
There is a TON of research that supports PCOS moms to stay on metformin for the length of their pregnancy. Studies show it helps to prevent miscarriage and gestational diabetes. A great place to find articles and information is on soulcysters.com website. I haven't met a single person on there that would agree to stop taking the met during pregnancy!
Good luck!
Good luck!
Nikki thank you so much! What a great resource. I guess I just need to arm myself with the studies I've printed off and a good attitude. I'm just trying to do what is best for me and the baby.
It's amazing how fast you can become so protective of something. My husband and I had been "not preventing" pregnancy for 4 years but between my weight, PCOS and his very low Testosterone level I was sure that it would never just happen for us. I had even made an appointment for the most well known Infertility Center in the DC area a week before we found out.
My grandmother was in a coma and we had put her on "Comfort Care" the week before (meaning no medicine, or IV fluids, just pain meds) and I woke up one morning and thought, she's waiting for something. So I tested and just about fainted when I saw that positive! The greatest blessing is that I got to tell her before she passed. She couldn't answer or acknowledge anything but I'm sure that she heard.
So needless to say it has been one huge emotional rollercoaster for me the past two weeks. I am just now starting to get excited and happy. It's been hard without my Grammy and it will continue to be, but it's such a blessing to have these great support groups available.
Thank you so much ladies!

I'm glad you found the website helpful! That is a great idea to bring some research articles to your doctor's appointment. That will help educate your doctor, as most are not PCOS experts.
I'm so sorry to hear about your grandma :( It is very special that you were able to share your news with her. Your story is something you can share with your baby that will bond him/her to your grandma forever.

I was put on it years ago for the same reason...went thru fertility for #1 and they kept me on it...this past pregnancy (surprise one on our own) they also kept me on it. I had no negative issues with it. The only thing is that the 1st pregnancy they never put me BACK on it after the baby and I ended up diabetic...my blood sugars went up real high.....
My RE keeps women on it during the first half of pregnancy (at least). Some women without PCOS (like me) even are prescribed it because it has been shown to be beneficial in women who have repeat pregnancy loss.
