Quick Advice-- UTI question

I woke up at 4 am with a UTI, it hurt so bad.  I waited until the urgent care clinic in my town opened and I went.  Sure enough the cultured my urine and it was a UTI, so they gave me some (safe, category B) antibiotics, then the doctor came in and says "you know, UTI's during pregnancy can cause major complications with the baby" and I said "Like what kinds" and he goes "you're going to have to call your OB"

Ok... my OB doesn't open until tomorrow so now I am freaking out.  I know I am not the only person who has had a UTI while pregnant, and I caught it right away.  Please tell me everything will be ok?

Sometimes I wonder where these urgent care Drs get there degrees from! I had a bad uti the weekend before I found out I was pregnant. I read if treated right away it shouldn't cause problems. I asked my ob when I went to see him because I was worried that it may have affected baby. He assured me that all was ok and if it came back he'd put me on antibiotics that are safe to take while pregnant. I don't know why this urgent care Dr. Didn't discuss it more with you, he should be well aware of what treatment is needed for a uti while pregnant. Had your ob's office been open you would've called them but since it's not you're trusting this dr to be competent enough to take care of you!

How will the UTI affect my baby?
If the UTI goes untreated, it may lead to a kidney infection. Kidney infections may cause early labor and low birth weight. If your doctor treats a urinary tract infection early and properly, the UTI will not cause harm to your baby.

It is so common during pregnancy and I wouldn't worry at all. Uti's are not good for anyone to go untreated. Real nice that the doc scared you!

So just breath & relax. You're good!

That info came from the American Pregnancy website.

Don't worry, love. It will be fine ... you're so on top of it, and so responsible ... your baby is just fine. :-) Good job getting treated right away!

Oh for goodness sake!  What an idiot!!!!!  Yes, untreated UTI's can cause devastating complications.  UTI's are sooo common in pregnancy it's unbelievable.  I worked for 5 years as  a Nurse Practitioner at a women's health clinic for medcaid patients.  I treated TONS of UTIs  NO ONE had any complications as a result!

Please don't fret!  You are getting treatment for it.  Drink lots of water and cranberry juice (if you don't dump from  the sugars... otherwise 1/3 juice... 2/3's water.

Unless there has been some HUGE research discovery that I'm unaware of.... (granted, I haven't practiced in 5 years)  than that guy was a certifiable idiot!

Cheers and take care... and please don't worry!!

if that were true my kids would be awful I have a bladder disease that makes me have a uti pretty much ALL the time. Was on antibiotics through almost all of my pregnancies to keep it from getting to a kidney infection. With Hayvann I had really bad kidney infections and spent 5 days in the hospital on iv antibiotics each time. I had so many antinbiotic I got thrush many times lol. Silly docs!
