Back home after 8 day hospital stay

This has been a rough ride this past week and a half.  On July 26th at 12;30am I woke up with what I thought were gas pains.  When I turned to lay on my side to relieve it, the pain got worse.  DH took me to the hosptial as a precaution.  They told me I had a partial bowel obstruction and gave me mag citrate.  I didn't have a bowel movement until they gave me an emena on July 28th.  I was in excrutiating pain, especially after I ate.  I saw GI, OB and surgeon and got 4 other diagnoses: UTI, IBS, esophagitis and hiatal hernia.  None of the doctors could really agree what was wrong, but they all stated it was from my gastric bypass.

I was originally released from the hosptial on July 30th, only to return 3 hours later by ambulance because I was in excrutiating pain again.  The doctors were very reluctant to give me pain meds and even sent a psychiatrist to my room to see if my pain could be managed by listening to relaxing music or dvds.  The psychiatrist recommended pain meds and I got them.

All this time, my baby was fine and never had any issues.  Her HR never dipped, I never had a contraction, my cervix is completely closed. The OB advised me unless the baby shows distress, they will not take her any earlier than necessary.  I'm very happy that she is ok, but I'm miserable.

I really don't believe their answer because the CT and EGD perfomed show no issue with my pouch or intestines coming from it.  It's been really rough because my belly is VERY tender and I double over in pain in I sit for long periods of time or if someone touches it.

I was released for the 2nd time on August 3rd and been home resting.  I see the OB Monday to determine when I can go back to work.  I see my bariaric surgeon on Tuesday to either rule out my bypass as the issue or to figure out what is wrong with my bypass.

The constant pain, and the acute pain after I eat, is horrific.  I'm afraid to eat at times because I don't want to be in pain.  I am eating, but it's soft foods and not a lot of it.  It's just very frustrating that I don't have a concrete diagnosis or a concrete plan to treat my pain.  I know the doctors can't do much due to the baby, but I wish they would try to keep me a little more comfortable and not always on the edge of really bad pain.  I know I may have to live with this for the next 11 weeks, but my pain can get to a 9 or 10.  I can live with a 6, maybe a 7, but not at a 9.

I'm just really discouraged, but I hope my surgeon can make heads or tails of it Tuesday.
Thanks for letting me vent.  I'm going to lay down and take a tylenol 3.

they only gave you tylenol 3? seriously? that stuff makes you MORE constipated, they shouldve given you percocet or dilauded..yeah they are narcotic, but they are safer for you and baby then tylenol 3. Want me to come and take care of the Dr's for you? >:) HOPEFULLY they gave you liquid version rather than pill version so it can stay in your system longer.

Sounds like to me you need to have an "advocate" for you during this time. I hope to god that you get some relief soon, and if it was an obstruction then why in the hell arent they trying to fix it? just because it doesnt "show up" at first glance scans doesnt mean it isnt there. just probably deeper in the intestine then what they think. Pretty bad when they thougth you were just out looking for some "good medicine"...that even makes me more mad...you are like me with pain tolerance, im usually doubled over, in tears before i go in. Keep us posted, stay resting and have a really indepth conversation with your OB.

My mom is usually my advocate; she's an ICU nurse.  However, her father-in-law died last Monday and she was helping her husband deal with his dad's service and accounts.  They didn't give me anything liquid, so I am taking pills. I was given dilaudid in the hospital via IV, but everyone kept telling me that because of the baby, I really shouldn't be on pain meds, especially if I'm already constipated.

The options given  to fix the obstruction were mag citrate and then Milk of Mag every day until I go.  I am passing gas, but no poo yet.  It still hurts after I eat.  I just had instant mashed potatoes and I'm contemplating taking another pill.

this sounds like exactly like what i am having. i have not gone to the bathroom #2 in like 4 days. I double over everytime i eat. I cannot sleep on my side. I just didn't know if it was constipation or stretching from my tummy tuck less than a year ago. I am 35 weeks Tuesday. I had to go to the hospital for a drip for dehydration, thinking the cramping was from that. But that didn't relieve it at all. I then thought maybe the baby is pushing on my tummy and it will be better once he drops. I took Miralax yesterday and today in hopes that something will relieve this pain, maybe if I can go to the bathroom, it will let up.

I am so so sorry you are going through this. I can really identify with you though. The pain you are describing and symptoms sound very similar to my bowel intussesception. They are starting to find that women who have gone through bariatric surgeon are more prone to this and in some cases more so during surgery. I had my first one and 17 weeks pregnant and needed emergency surgery. My next one was 2 weeks after giving birth and they saw it on the ct scan and then once they did the surgery it corrected itself. Then I just had another on a week ago. I have been in the hospital for 10 days as well. They wanted to try to find the issue. Sadly they can't find the cause but they do think that it is caused by bile. If you are eating high fat (which I was eating extremely high fat during pregnancy so maybe would grow and I ate moderately higher fat when breastfeeding) Fat irritates the bowel and for me, I no longer have a gall bladder so there is nothing to filter that bile causing it to irriate the bowels even more. If it was an intussesception then the reason they may not have seen it on a ct scan was because at that time it may not have been happening. What happens for me is that I always feel contractions sort of in my right side of my stomach right below my rib cage. Then it suddenly reaches the point of severe pain. It hurts more than giving birth in my opinion. Even the strongest pain meds can't help until corrects itself. They now have me lowering my fat intake and I am on anti-spasm meds. This is very hard to diagnose..I would really try to see a gastrointerologist if I were you. They can help get to the bottom of this hopefully. I will likely have to deal with this the rest of my life, but hopefully the meds will help! I also just found out the my liver is inflamed, which can be all sorts of things. SO SCARY! But they believe it's because for DS surgery you have to take high amounts of Vitamin D..I had to take even more during pregnancy and they think it took a major toll on my liver...Hoping that's all it is and it will heal!  I will be praying for you!! I hope that you have no more episodes of this, but if you do I would ask for an MRI/Enterography and to see a gastro specialist!

I saw my GI doctor and other doctors in his pratice during my stay.  They could not agree on a diagnosis, so I got the 4.  I reviewed my CT report and it says other than poo they can't find anything.  My diet is soft and bland and will even revolt over sf jello.  I will talk to my bariatric surgeon to see if it could be a intussesception.

My labor and delivery nurse told me yesterday to do (1) suppository while drinking mag citrate. I vomited every ounce of mag citrate that entered my body, I have rarely felt a pain more awful than the mag citrate hitting my tummy. And I only got down half the bottle. The nurse then said try a Fleet enema. I still have not had a BM and am scared of the enema. I am not in pain this morning, but the morning is young.

Candess, I wondered if it was gallbladder related as well. I still have my gallbladder and I am 4 and 1/2 years out from RNY. It usually hits me hard when I eat things like butter on my toast, etc. I am going to pay close attention to my fat intake and the pain. It feels like contractions, and i thought I was in early labor too but I wasn't.

Lollipop, I too took the Milk of Mag for 2 days in a row, and only had water come out. I so feel you in your struggle. I really pray we both find some relief and soon! Between this and needing iron infusions, as much as I love my precious baby, I just don't know how I can make it another potentially 5 weeks. I feel like I am dying some days

I was honestly praying it was my gallbladder, because at least they could remove it and fix the issue.  Per the tests and ultrasound, it's perfectly fine.  I'm really forcing myself to eat at the moment because I'm so scared of the pain.  I break down in tears.  11 weeks seems like an enternity right now.
