Yay.

the amount of alcohol would be almost non-existant once baked. (unless it's totally soaked in rum). You can always make a cake with run flavoring instead of the real thing if you're truly concerned.

I indulged in an occasional glass of wine while pregnant with my midwife's blessing to ease contractions in the last few months of pregnancy.

I am so glad to hear you say that about the occasional glass of wine. I plan on asking my doctor about that too. I know a lot of folks frown upon it...but surely ONE glass once in a while is not going to hurt anything. Baby will probably be feeling pretty good!

I personally would say Yay, but a "small" piece.  Not only because of the alcohol, but also because when I was pregnant--I had a very small tolerance for sugars!

I would say use your own judgement.

It's probably fine, but when I was pregnant, I was paranoid about everything I ate or drank. My husband wanted me to take a bite of his Tiramisu at Olive Garden and I wouldn't do it cause I was too afraid it had alcohol in it.

hows this for a response....

Medical professionals, dr nurses midwives etc encourage to have a pregnant mom drink RED wine or a shot of whiskey during the last few months of pregnancy. The alcohol help mama relax so she can go into natural labor. The red wine helps keep the blood thin and BP down to help prevent Preeclampic/toxemia. It also helps with not beiing able to sleep at night. ONE moderate glass is fine.

With Rum cake, it depends on how it is prepared...is it put into the batter before baking or is it added after words for a "rum soaked cake". anything that is cooked with alcohol, it disappears. so go ahead and enjoy that piece of rum cake, in moderation. I was pregnant with my first and went to a family xmas. uncle offered wine for dinner, i was hesitant and my aunt grabbed the glass and the bottle and poured. She says, "drink it, you will thank me later". I was sitting ther like they were going to judge me for drinking while pregnant. Then my OTHER aunt says "its ok and we arent judging, we know the perks and benefits of having a glass, and frankly honey, you need a drink"

i wouldn't.  I saw a thing on food network where they say not as much alcohol cooks out of food as we think.  It would prob not be that much if you have a small piece but I am a crazy paranoid person.
