Well, it depends on where your hemoglobin is. I was on iron my last trimester and it never brought up my numbers. I had to have iron infusions post pregnancy. I was low ferratin but my hemoglobin was at a point post section that it was a concern but not where I had to have an emergency transfusion. So, it depends in if you have low ferratin but your hemoglobin hasn't dropped to a bad level.

Well I know that a few months ago they ran it at the ob's office and at my bariatric center and said it was a 5...and should be above a 26?  So they put me one chelated iron 3 x a day but its been making me so sick that I know I'm not getting much down.  Even with promethazine I'm still sick all day when I eat.

I'm just positive my level will be even lower this time so I w2as curious if they could transfuse or something..never been through this.  I'm at a higher risk for bleeding because this is my 4th c-section (having my tubes tied) as well and I'm a bit nervous about it.

I don't know which number they are taking about. It is not your hemoglobin. Your ferratin is iron which then in turns helps you make new blood cells. So upon a chemical panel they can see where your ferratin is. Additionally where your hemoglobin along with the make up of those cells (if they are misshaped and old), etc. So, if your hemoglobin is ok you don't need a transfusion. If your ferratin is that low, and you are not responding to iron pulls, then you might need ab iron infusion. It is common for women to become anemic in their last trimester.

Thanks for all the info everyone :)  I have my pre-op bloodwork this friday and I'm going to ask them for specifics on the numbers and what the plan will be.  Maybe I'll ask my ob as well today and see what she says.

I've never had a transfusion...hopefully there aren't any yucky side effects.

I do know ever Bariatric doctor looks at things in different ways as well as OB.I had my surgeon run it my OB and my specialist for my pregnancy who as well specialize in Gastric bypass out of three one said it was low and the other two said it was fine.It was my Gastric doctor that said it was low so talking with the other two they told me it was normal off by just a few points and gave me iron pills.I guess gastric doctors set it a little higher so they catch it before it goes low.I was fine tell I had my emergency D&C then I was given blood and some iron in hospital. It really just comes down to your doctor i have learned.

May my Angles rest in peace.....
