gyno or reproductive endo?
Hey ladies,
I could use your help. Before surgery i was wanting to start the process of TTC and i went to see a reproductive endocrinologist. i have pcos and i was seeing him for that. thats when he told me i should get the sleeve. but i remember before then he started running all sorts of tests.
i haven't seen him since i decided to get surgery. i went to my regular gyno last week and she knew about my surgery. i told her i want a baby. i asked her if i should go to my endo or just see her. you can see how i'd be confused since there's a lot of overlapping there. she told me to just start trying to get pregnant.
now...i have to say the service at my gyno office (the doc is great, just the staff service) is getting to the point where i don't wanna go anymore. waiting 2 hours for an apt, being left on hold for 10 min only to call back and be left on hold again. i'm done with it. not to mention i started going there before college when i lived at home. now its totally out of the way for me. but finding a new gyno isn't easy. i'm very particular, especially after that traumatic incident with that other gyno.
so now i'm left with finding another gyno. but i think maybe i should see the RE because i know he wanted to run all these tests on me before. i mean, i do have cysts and he knows about my surgery. at this point i don't know if its necessary or what. on the one hand i know he'll run all these tests and i trust him. but on the other hand i don't want to have to go to him AND a gyno who are doing a lot of the same thing. should i just go to him instead of a gyno/obgyn?
what do you guys think i should do? should i only go to him if i have fertility issues? so confused.

I vote for the RE until you are "good and pregnant".
I also have PCOS but my Endo is not an RE, just regular Endo. I was on Metformin for years, finally conceived and went to an OB/GYN who I really didn't know much about but she practiced at the hospital I wanted to use. The office was very disorganized and only had one doctor and a very overwhelmed Nurse Practioner. Well, they failed to notice on my initial bloodwork that my HCG level was much too low for the number of weeks pregnant I should be. They sent me for a dating ultrasound at 9 weeks and I found out the pregnancy had ended at 6 weeks.
I spoke to a friend who happened to be the office manager of an REs office in town. She told me to call her immediately if I got another positive test. I got a positive on a Sunday and called her. She told me to be there at 8:00 AM the next morning and they would do bloodwork. I had a blood test and the doctor called me in the afternoon to confirm I was pregnant and schedule an Ultrasound for a week later. I also had follow up Betas to make sure my HCG was doubling as it should be. I had Ultrasounds every week for the first 6 weeks and every two weeks after that for my first trimester and then I "graduated" to the OB. It was so great to be monitored so closely...it really put my mind at ease. And, while I was spending the first 12 weeks with the RE, I was able to research and choose an OB who I LOVED with input from the RE.
Thats my .02!

I forgot to mention that the RE put me on Progesterone right away, too. It may or may not have helped maintain the pregnancy...*****ally knows...but I felt better knowing they were doing "something" to help me stay pregnant.
Good luck!

I conceived normally both times. I was taking Metformin but I had been on that for years. I didn't take any other drugs or have any procedures. The thing that really, really helped was an iPhone app called iPeriod. It really helped me keep track of my cycles and know when I was ovulating.
The Progesterone was prescribed after I was already pregnant because my levels were a little low.
I don't know if you're on Metformin but if you are and you do get pregnant, talk to your doctor about staying on it. There's tons of research about women with PCOS remaining on Metformin during pregnancy to reduce the risk of miscarriage. Depending on how "old school" your doctor is, they might want you to go off of it but there is no reason to. My doctor allowed me to stay on it through my entire pregnancy.

I also have PCOS and went to a fertility ob/gyn specialist. It took about 5 years to have my first healthy full term pregnancy but now I have 4 beautiful children (9, 7, 4 & 2). Only with my first did I have to use fertility medications the rest where natural, but 3 of the 4 live birth pregancies were twins in which 1 twin did not make it past 16 weeks. Wish you lots of luck and search out the best in the field!
aww thank you. i have a big fear that its gonna be really hard to have kids. not being able to conceive would be the biggest tragedy of my life. because i've wanted to be pregnant for so long. people tell me you've lots a lot of weight it might be easier than you think. i honestly don't know which way it will go. its a mystery. but my husband doesn't want it to happen too fast. he's been waiting to have lots of TTC sex for years. lol.
