Starting to TTC and have a couple of questions
DH and I are planning on starting to TTC in the fall/winter and I just have a couple of questions.
I had RNY in October 2009 and lost #120. I still have some more that I would like to lose, maybe 30-40 but I am not going to postpone TTC for that.
In preparation for TTC, I went for my yearly blood work and office bone scan. The bone scan found that I am below average for my bone density and have Osteopenia. Specifically my T-score is a -1.12 and Z-score is -1.43. The office sent me for a follow up full body DEXA scan and I had that this morning... should have the results in a few days.
I guess my question is, I am not sure how much this will impact if I even should be TTC. On that note, I do have an appointment with my OB/Gyn this afternoon that was scheduled just for a pap and to discuss with her our TTC and when I should have my IUD taken out and let her know about the RNY.
Has anyone here gotten pregnant after being diagnosed with Osteopenia? Also, how did your vitamins change during TTC and during pregnancy? Ive read that certian levels of vitamins that are too high will hurt the baby, which obviously others that are too low will hurt us.
Thanks all!

Everyones OB is different......mine had me taking two prenatal vitamins a day and extra D that was it some go through taking all plus prenatal.I was told as well to much isn't good and also not enough I was tested every month doctors can keep a watch on that.
Best of luck to you!

What were your lab results for vit D, calcium, and PTH? I'm guessing your PTH is high, and I'm hoping they even tested it (they don't always know to), and that would be a clear indicator of your body leeching calcium from your bones either because you're not taking enough calcium OR your D is so low that the calcium you take isn't being properly absorbed/utilized.
Personally, I would fix my labs before I TTC. When you're pregnant, that baby is going to take what it needs from you, and if you're already starting at a disadvantage, that can't be good!
We are also about to start TTC, and I just had labs run in June. Everything came back normal except a couple that were actually high (copper and B6, but luckily not dangerously high) and a D that was not "technically" low but lower than I'd like, so I'm making some supplement adjustments. I plan on continuing to take everything I take now when I am pregnant (multis, B12, iron, vit C, calcium, vit A, vit D, zinc, and probiotics). Neither my PCP nor my gyn has directed me differently (except to change out my regular multi for a prenatal). I also have a nice high folate level :)
