Odd Baby Shower Question
My mom, aunt and girlfriend are throwing me a shower. I got a call from my mom today asking what color should the baby be on the decorations and games. Apparently, they ask her if she wants a Caucasian, African American or Hispanic baby. I'm black and DH is white. I asked DH and he said "get Asian"...no help! Anywhooo...there is no guarantee LO will be brown at birth or any time. My mom is very, very fair and has been thought to be white. I get mistaken for Native American mostly.
I was thinking of getting one with black and one with white, but should I just choose Hispanic and pass it off an multi-racial? My mom is really worked up about this and doesn't want to offend DH's family. I asked what the decor was and she won't tell me since it's a surprise.

I'm Hispanic and fair skinned and my fiancee is white white white with red hair. I went through the same dilemma and just did the caucasian baby because I'm not too dark. I figure it doesn't offend me, and was probably safest for his family too. I think the hispanic baby might be a good pick for you since you're not too dark and he's caucasian. Good luck!
i would just get a "tan" or hispanic baby.

You can just have a theme that doesn't include pictures of a baby... like Animal crackers, baby books, or duckies... there are some super cute ideas here: http://www.marthastewart.com/photogallery/baby-shower-themes#slide_1
There's no point in having your mom stress out over something silly like getting the hispanic vs asian baby for a cake... besides- isn't eating a cake baby kind of creepy?

I did tell my mother there didn't have to be any babies for the decor, but since I'm not planning the shower I have no say in the decor.
I told her to use the Hispanic babies if she had to choose. I really didn't think my MIL would care what color the babies were but she is very sensitive and tends to freak out at the strangest things. I know she broke down crying when she found out red heads ran in my family. Apparently, she's scared of red headed people. I did tell my mom to make sure none of the babies for the decor had red hair. I don't need my MIL in hysterics that day.

I have a friend go through the same issue. However, the shower is for YOU and the baby, not for anyone else. Sorry, and this may sound crass, but really you shouldn't have to stress over this type of stuff for the shower. It's a celebration of your little one's arrival, and I had very specifics for my upcoming shower. No princess crap, no pepto bismol pink blow-out celebration because that's just not me, and the shower is for me and Tatum.
You might not have a say in decor, but you could let your mom know that to decrease the risk of your MIL blowing a gasket on you, or any other guests, and causing a major scene, then skip the "baby" decor and save everyone some heartache.
