Hello guys.. well im pre-op and am worried about it being too late to get pregnate.. I am 37 and my husband is 40 .. I understand that I have to wait 18 months to 2 years after RNY to try to get pregnate. In the meantime im also told that I can not be on the Pill.. im afraid to take any kind of birth control only because i feel its going to prolong us trying to get pregnate. Is condoms enough ?  What are our chances ? Has anyone else been in my situation ? Im open to any advice .. thanks in advance

My OB said it is getting more and more common to see women that are in their 40's having babies.

Birth Control pills are not to be used as your only form of B/C. Condoms are also helpful, maybe even a spermacide. My pregnancy after WLS was so much better and easier than before, so it is really up to you though. You have to do what is right for you, whether it is before or after surgery, but waiting till 12-18 months post op is the best idea... Don't try sooner post-op, it is not safe.

Don't give up hope! There are a lot more women having babies older! Waiting your surgeons recommended time ensures a healthier you and a healthier baby! Its worth the wait!

I was 38 when I had WLS.  Got the green light to TTC a year later (not at goal at 175 lb but OK'd b/c of my age).  I've since had multiple miscarriages, but they're not suspected to be age related for the most part.  I've got three genetic mutations for blood clotting disorders and am drugged up to my eyeballs to prevent future mc.  We'll see if it works.

Many drs will tell you as you reach 40 that your chances of getting pregnant on your own are astronomically low.  I say it's bs to base that only on your age.  Every person is different.  Of the 5 pregnancy/mc's I've had, 4 of them were 'natural' pregnancies; one was w/IUI.  Talk to your dr - surgeon and ob - and make sure they know what your plan is....then if they recommend having the surgery first, to get to a healthier place, then do so - then work your ass off - literally - to lose the weight...the sooner you get to goal, the sooner you'll get the OK to TTC.  Becasue of your age, once you start trying, I believe the fertility specialists will tell you to give it six months try (versus 12 months for younger women) then come in and see them to make sure all's well and see if they can 'help' things along.

Best wishes on whatever you decide.  I hope that soon - whether it's a year or two from now post-WLS or sooner if you decide to TTC before WLS - that you're holding your little one in your arms.

I was 37 when I had my son PreOP and 284 was ending pregnancy weight.  I just turned 42 in June (22 mnths post op)  and am pregnant again.

After 35, is a higher risk with pregnancies but .. it is done alot more now.  I know several women in their 40's who have had healthy pregnancies and kids.

I'm actually healthier now with this baby than I was with my son.  But due to age I'm still at risk for several things.

You have to decide which you prefer but know that you do have options.
