The babies mouth should be covering the whole areola not just the nipple. Nipple size shouldn't matter as long as milk is coming out. I wouldn't suggest a nipple shield unless it is absolutely needed. I say unless you have to pump don't just bf. She has to get use to your breast. If you don't think she is latching properly contact a lactation consultant. WIC has a free one as do most hospitals or LLC groups. You can also you tube proper latch videos. Bf'ing can be so difficult at first but she has never done it before and neither has mommy. Don't get discouraged you are doing great. Hope this stuff helps. Also try different positions. Cradle, football, laying down. Good luck

I totally agree with Jessica. As the owner of funky nipples (breast aug and lift 7 years ago ... boo) I can say that a shield is not neccesary for everyone. If it isn't working for you, toss it. Find a good Lactation Consultant in your area ... they can be sooo helpful, and maybe join a BF support group. I have found both those things so helpful!  BF is a huge challenge for so many of us ... myself included! Keep trying! :-)
