Vitamin/Absorption Question

Hi everyone....

My prenatal vits that I was taking have the DHA component in a gel cap.  Is it true that we (RNYers) don't absorb the contents of these??

What kind of vits/DHA are you taking??  WHat's the brand and where can you buy them?  My mom is coming to visit me on Wed, and I want her to bring some along.... also, can someone give me the brand name of a good B 12 supplement??

Thanks everyone!

Your right about the gel caps, us RNYers don't absorb them.  Can you ask your doctor to prescribe another kind that are not gel cap?  With my last pregnancy and this one as well, I didn't take any prenatal vitamins, I just continued taking my complete multi-vitamin and added extra folic acid and calcium!  I would have your vitamin levels checked if possible and see if your low or high on anything.  I had my labs drawn in May and all my levels were good, except my iron was on the high side, so they told me to cut back my supplement to every other day.  I plan to have my levels drawn again in early July  and then again in early October (due date is 10/25).

Currently I take daily:

1 store brand (equaline - Century) complete multivitamin
1 store brand (Rite Aid) 400mcg Folic Acid
1 Nature Made 400iu Vitamin D3
1 Nature's Bounty 500mcg sublingual B-12 (I have taken other B-12 with higher dosages, but I like the sublinguals best.....and remember you can't overdose on B-12)
1-3 store brand (Meijer) 630mg calcium citrate with Vitamin D (500iu).....remember when taking calcium to take calcium citrate and not calcium carbonate......also, don't take your calcium and iron together as they cancel each other out AND remember that we only absorb 500mg of calcium each time we take a pill, so it's recommended to take up to 3 pills a day for a total of 1,500mcg's a day

Then I take 1 store brand (Meijer) Ferrous Sulfate (which is 65mg of iron) every other day!  I make sure I take this at least 3 hours after I take the above mentioned vitamins as mentioned above due to the calcium supplement.

I don't always use the same brands of vitamins but keep the levels pretty much the same with whatever kind I take.  I always buy whatever is on sale or the cheapest!

My surgeon said that the DHA gel caps work. It's a good question. I think I am going to write down the list that was posted on here. They do check all my levels ever 3 months and every thing has been coming back ok. I take the Wal-Greens brand prenatals and DHA. My OB wrote me a prenatal that had less value than the Wal-Greens prenat. I saw somewhere where we are going to need a vitamin K shot at some point. Has anyone else heard of this?

Thanks guys... good info.  As for the Vitamin K.  I've never heard this.  Vitamin K causes blood to clot....  I don't know why anyone would give this to a pregnant person, unless that person had a previously diagnosed coagulation disorder!!

If someone suggests taking this, PLEASE get a good rationale!!!!!
Best wishes,
Linda
