Update on Miss Jaelyn
So, for those on my Facebook this will be a lot of repeat material
Jaelyn is officially six weeks old, and yes is still a resident of the NICU. She ended up not needing to have a VP Shunt placed, and is responding well to a trial medication normally used to treat glaucoma. Her ventricles are almost normal size, and she is absorbing cerebrial fluid at normal rate! She is however, struggling to eat her feeds by bottle or breast. She was getting feeds through bottle as tolerated, and the rest placed in NG tube. Since she is now term and still struggling we were given a choice to make.
They asked us to think about placing a G-tube in her belly so that she can come home with us, and still receive the assistance she needs. She had a neuro consult (seperate from her surgeon) and he agreed she needed some assistance but that it would be a temporary issue. So last Friday she had her G-tube placed. Seeing your infant come out of surgery is not something I would wish on my worst enemy, and was one of hardest things I have had to do. I know in my heart however that is was right choice.
She should be home with us soon!!

I'm sorry you (and Jaelyn) had to go through the surgery...but the pay off of finally getting to take her home makes it worth it. Hopefully at home with her family, she'll progress quickly and be able to eat easier. Great news that she's doing so well in all other aspects.
