? about birth control post op
So I had my 3rd child last April and had a Mirena IUD put in for bc. I had one put in after the birth of my 2nd child (pre-op) and did fine with it in for 2 1/2 yrs. But after a year of it in this time around, I opted to have it out because I was thinking it was making me sort of depressed and a little anxious. Well I had it out in the end of April and within 2 hrs, felt something different in my body. And two DAYS later, I felt a world of difference, it was amazing!!! I was no longer as depressed or anxious and was soooooo much happier!! I didn't dread taking care of my children anymore (just got irritated and short tempered w/the IUD in) and actually enjoyed getting up every morning and living my life!! Who knew the stupid IUD would do that to me, with just a little bit of hormone??!! I had heard and read on their website (mirena.com) that the IUD can cause depression in 10% of patients, so that was me!
Anyways, I had to also be put in the bcp (Lo-Estrin) back in October of last year because my periods were all wacky still after 5 months of having the IUD in and 6 mos after having my baby. I was having af all the time and spotting and it was just annoying. The pill really helped and actually got me to only having AF once a month!
So I went off it after 2 months and about 10 days later, got horrible insomnia. Never had insomnia before and had no idea what was going on!! I'd just lay there for 2-3 hrs and not be able to fall asleep! Eventually got on a Rx sleep aid, Lunesta, and was able to sleep. I had blood tests done after a month, to see what was wrong with me and my dr tested everything (including female hormones estrogen and progesterone). It all came back normal and he had no idea what was wrong. I finally put 2 and 2 together and was like wait a minute, I stopped the bcp just before this happened!!! So I started back on the pill and within 5-6 weeks, the insomnia magically went away! And around 3-4 weeks of taking it, I noticed I wasn't as wide awake at night and the insomnia was getting better.
So stupid me, I tried again 2 other times to get off the bcp and the insomnia came about AGAIN!! About 10 days after stopping the pill, the insomnia was back in full force again! So I went back on the pill and within 6 wks, no more insomnia! WEIRD!!!!
So since I had my IUD out almost 2 months ago, I decided to stay on the pill and we are using condoms. We are 99% sure we are done but have cancelled two vasectomy appts for hubby because we just didn't feel right about it when it got close to the appt. But I'm wondering, does this have anything to do with me having gastric bypass, that going off the bcp cold turkey brings on this weird symptom of insomnia??? I'm wondering if I should wean myself off it (when we know we're done having kids and hubby has the V or if I want to get pg again) by taking a half pill every day for 2 pill packs and then try taking one every other day in the 2nd pack at the end? I saw a lady online that got horrible acne when she'd go off the pill and another one would get nausea.... they both weaned themselves off and were fine after that. I guess some people's bodies are sensitive to hormones and going off them cold turkey is too hard? My doctors (ob/gyn and PCP) have no idea what is wrong and why I get insomnia, so I guess I'm going to have to do this myself!!!
So how likely is it that I'd get pg using the bcp and condoms in the next year or so? Anyone gotten pg using the bcp and condoms before??

take a deep breath and BREATHE!!!!!!!!
it sounds like you just need to try a different type of bcp. thats all. you said it yourself that some peoples bodies are sensitive to hormones etc...sounds like your one of the unlucky ones...I suggest the "implanon" (sp?). I was on bcp and used a condom and pulled out and i still got knocked up with Q. I was also mos and half out from having my panni done so that had alot to do with it too. Body trying to recover after losing all that weight and need to get things rerouted in the body etc...2weeks after i found out i was pg, i read online that they said post weightsurgery patients should not take the bcp because of how our bodies absorb and digest differently. they suggested the shot, implanon, other forms...as for IUD? there have been ALOT of law suits going on because of all the issues they have had with them.
so do some online research on different types of bcp brands out there or talk to PlannedParenthood or someone like that to help with what kinds there are out there. Good luck, yep im at a cross roads too, i dont want ot get fixed yet im happy with how many kids i have...hard being a woman somedays.
