An intro and question... :) Kinda long!
Hi everyone,
I haven't really logged into the site much other than to lurk around and see what advice others have posted and everyone here is really helpful to each other and you guys offer some great advice. So I've decided to stop lurking cause I really need advice from other post-op patients. :)
June 29th will be my 2 yr anniversary... I'm also 32 weeks prego. My pre-op weight was 454 and right before I got prego my weight was down to 269. So I definitely was not at my goal weight when I got prego. Nonetheless my husband and I were really excited as I had tons of fertility problems at my higher weight. During my whole pregnancy I have only gained 17 lbs which I am ok with and plan on breastfeeding which will hopefully help me down to my goal weight eventually.
My OB has been awesome and has been great at doing all my vitamin labwork and making sure I don't gain too much weight... I of course couldn't do the glucose test so I had to test my blood sugars 4 times a day for 2 weeks.... My sugars were never "high" but would run on average about 95 (this was my fasting sugars) and my one hours after I ate would average between 80-90....
So because my fasting sugars were higher than 90, my OB wanted me to see a dietician and gestational diabetes nurse... Which I did go to. I was not thrilled with them... The dietician that I saw did not have much experience with bypass patients and was appalled that I was not eating more carbs per meal. I know I barely squeeze in enough protein but yet she was more concerned that I'm not eating 45 grams of carbs for lunch and dinner and less protein. I'm barely getting in maybe 75-85 grams of protein a day...
Did anyone else have problems with gestational diabetes during pregnancy and if so did they follow the diet that the dietician gave them? I warned them that I would be literally stuffing myself to eat 6 times per day and the amount that they want me to eat... I don't want to stretch out my pouch...
As a side note the baby is growing fine and weighed 4 lbs 4 oz at my Friday appt.... So she's not small or large...
Thanks in advance for any replies I get! Any input at all is appreciated... Thanks ladies! :)

Hi and congratulations on your pregnancy and welcome to the board.
I myself didn't/ don't have any gest diabetes, but is there any way you can see you nut from your original surgical team ? - maybe they'd have a different view or could collaborate with your current dietician. Hopefully someone will be able to add to the post.
you're right though, your baby sounds right on target for 32 weeks.
Good luck and welcome once again! - stop lurking and join us,
Becky

I've no experience or input re the gd...but wanted to say welcome and congrats. What took you so long to come out of lurkdom?! I know there are some women w/gd experience who will likely pop in. If they don't, post a new post titling it something about 'Question re gestational diabetes and nutritionist.' Doesn't have to be exact, but something to grab their attention. Not everyone has time to read all the posts, but if it's something they know they can specifically answer, they will.
Welcome again.
Welcome again.

Thanks ladies! I don't know what took me so long to come out of lurkdom but I'm here now!
I could go see my surgeon's nutritionist but she doesn't take insurance and is cash only which can be kinda expensive with her.... But if I have to I will. I let my OB know about my concerns with the diabetic nutritionist and she said they have to send me as a precaution (aka she's CYA'ing herself) lol but that if I continued my normal diet I should be ok. Only 7 1/2 weeks to go so hopefully no major changes with my sugars between now and then...

Since you're so close to the end of your pregnancy, you might be able to get by with only 1-2 appointments w/your surgeon's nutritionist. If she only takes ca****'d obviously mean money out of pocket...but at least only a few times, not for months on end. Give it a thought and see if you can swing it, just to make sure those last few weeks stay healthy ones for you and your baby.
