Pregnancy Food intake Opinions

So I have heard two differning opinions and would be really interested in this boards thoughts.  (I'm sure there are more but these two

Opinion one:

The mother must add more calories into her diet because the baby is going to consume them and to be a healthy baby mother  needs to consume more and add all the nutrients possible.

Opinion two:

No need to adjust the calories in your diet if you are eating healthy already.  The baby will take what it needs and get everything first.  The Mothers weight can sustain, go down or go up during pregnancy.
The old school of thought of adding more calories just adds unneeded weight.

Scenarios I was thinking of when contemplating the options above:

Women who are obese (I was one of them) and did not add more calories (because their bodies could sustain the pregnancy)

Women who are underweight and don't eat any more calories an/or anorexic (sp?) etc.

WLS patients and their eating limitation/rules.

I believe that if your are overweight or obese when getting pregnant then option #2 makes sense because your body and normal intake will give the baby everything it needs and you have no need to "gain" weight because your body has plenty of reserves to sustain itself.  However, I believe that for women who are healthy weight or even under weight, the extra calories are necessary because your body does not have the reserves to make up for what the baby is taking from you and you need to accomodate the deficit with extra calories/ nutrients.  In either scenario, the baby will get everything it needs from the mother's body, it is the mother who is at risk if she is not meeting her own nutritional requirements above and beyond what baby needs.

I'm in the first group. My pre-pregnancy/maintenance weight was 125lbs with a bmi of 22. I consumed around 1400-1500 calories a day before the pregnancy. I was instructed too eat 1700-1800 calories a day, my pregnancy gain should be 35lbs, and I'm NOT okay with a 35lb gain. I have no malabsorption issue so I absorb every single thing I eat. I really don't have any "rules" or limitations with VSG. I have restriction, but those sneaky, slider foods go right down without issue. I have gained a solid 10lbs in 19 weeks. A lot of this is contributed to the fact that I quit smoking again.

My high risk ob is so over the moon with my weight gain, my regular ob is pretty stinking excited as well. Sprout is thriving, and weighs 2oz more than most 18 week old babies as of my u/s last Friday. My labs are stellar, I feel great physically, and medically, I'm fabulous.

I'm eating around 1700-1800 calories per day as recommended. Some days it's less because I just don't feel like eating, but I'm doing it to maintain my weight and sustain a healthy environment for Sprout.

My whole outlook on this is you know when your body needs something.Like for me I was sick with morning sickness if I didn't keep food in me every two hours.I made good choices when I ate.Your body knows I went with the flow.At 25 weeks when I delivered both my twins were close to 1 pound 13 oz so it was working for me.I say go with flow of your body.

May my Angles rest in peace.....

My OB told me I could gain weight (up to 35 or so pounds), but that he absolutely did not want me LOSING weight.

I was told I needed to maintain my weight at the minimium.

I saw a nutritionist. I was given the # of calories needed to maintain my weight plus 300 to sustain baby.

When I did lose (at the beginning) he told me baby would take what it needed. But in the future months I should strive to maintain weight. I ended up gaining 35 pounds. It freaked me out at first. But I got used to it.

Now 3 weeks postpartum I have lost 22 pounds. But I still have some left to go. It is harder to lose after baby IMO.
