Transitioning from formula to milk

My baby will be 1 year old next week and I am thinking about how to switch her to whole milk. How did you all transition your 1 year old from formula to whole milk? I know I did it with my first daughter, but I don't remember what I did, so any advice would help. I'm thinking just cold turkey, no more formula, you get milk. But did you put the milk in a bottle or is that when you switched completely to sippy cups?

With both my kid they were off bottles completely by 12 months. But reguardless if she still has a bottle or not I would not do it cold turkey. I mixed 1 part milk and 3 parts formula and uppsed the milk and lowered the formula every 2-3 days just to make sure it didnt bother them. How does she do with cheese, yogurt and other dairy products. Im sure she will be fine but doing it gradually gives their digestive systems to adjust. :)

She doesn't have any problems with foods except brocolli and beans giving her gas pains.
My first daughter also wasn't using bottles at 12 months either, she's different than my first too in that she's super small so I definately don't want to do anything to make it where she won't drink it.

I just started mixing milk in with her formula around 11 months.  I wanted to be done with formula completely by 12 months but her pedi gave us 6 cans at her appointment so we've been using it.  She gets mostly milk and some formula which is probably a good thing since she's become a very picky eater.  The extra nutrition in formula is a plus right now.

We're pretty lucky that when it comes to milk and formula she's not picky.  She will drink straight formula, formula mixed with milk or straight milk.

She did grab her sister's sippy cup which had real milk in it last week and seemed to be drinking off of it for awhile until we noticed it wasn't her cup and I think she liked it, so hopefully that won't be a problem, but she's starting to get picky too. She won't eat baby food now, it has to be table food and even with that she's getting picky.

I personally wouldn't switch cold turkey.  Her body needs time time to adjust to the difference.  Like another poster stated, start by 1 part milk and 1 part formula for a couple of days and then decrease again for the next several days until she is weaned completely off the formula.  I also did this using a bottle, but if you think she would transition good from a bottle to sippy cup, then by all means try that and maybe you can be done with both the bottle and formula at the same time.  Otherwise maybe give her small amounts of milk in a cup after a smaller amount of formula in her bottle (if you don't want her to acquire a taste for milk in her bottle) and transition that way.  Good luck in whatever you decide!

I was thinking that too, it might be easier to just put the milk in a sippy cup and not a bottle then maybe slowly let up on bottle feedings replaced by the sippy cup. Thanks!

I tried to do half formula half milk and it really bothered her.  She threw it up almost every time.  So after 2 days of that I switched her to just milk and put it in a bottle for 2 days.  Then I just took the bottle cold turkey and she didn't skip a beat and she HATED the sippy before then.  I think try the mixing thing and if she has a bad reaction then try just milk.

And OMG Harmony is one!!! WOW!

Yeah, I am not wanting to mix the too, that seems gross to me. I think I may just switch out one bottle a day for milk and put it in a sippy cup instead so that she can wean off both the bottle and formula at the same time. I like that approach! Thanks.

I can not believe she's going to be 1 on Friday!!!!! It is nuts how quickly a year goes by!

How are you feeling?

I started mixing formula and milk around 9 months. then each month I uped it until she was completely off.  She is now 11 months old and drinks full milk bottles. She has shown no signs of "damage" or what not... although she is drinking more milk than she did formula. Could just be because shes older/bigger now....idk.
