iron is so yucky!!

ugh. i'm just realizing that the iron they gave me (they being my surgeon's office) was like 17 or 18mgs.

since i ran out and decided i didn't want to have to buy from them anymore and i'd rather go to a vitamin shoppe or something i've gone through like 3 kinds of iron. 65mg, 27mg, 28 mg. i hated them all. they were gross sooooo gross. burping up iron is one of the nastiest things ever. i swear i take these stupid caplets now (the kind where you see the powder in a clear casing that dissolves in water) well...i swear it dissolved in my esophogus and i burped up like a powder. it tasted like dirt and ground up coins. i almost puked!! and speaking of puking, the last kind i had made me wretch. i'm dreading taking my iron.

so i was like ok....they only had me taking 17 or 18mgs. the prenatal i have has 14mgs. thats not much less. its in the same ballpark. i don't mind my prenatals at all. they're small and smooth and very easy to take. no side effects or anything.  i think what i'm gonna do is stop taking the separate iron and just take the prenatals (along with my vit d, b12, calcium) and see what happens when they take my labs at the end of the month. if they tell me i need more iron i will go back to the bariatric advantage chewables. because they were tiny and not bad tasting. and its worth the money/hassle not to be grossed out.

right now (because i haven't been told to take calcium) i'm just taking 2 calcium citrate chews a day. i love them. highlight of my day. if they tell me i need more calcium i'll get the citrical petites.

i have to say, paying a little more for something pleasant is worth it to me. because taking gross vitamins is awful.

I have a VSG and also take a pre-natal as my multi with iron. I take a sublinguel b complex 2-3 x per week, and 2000 UI of vit D daily. I try to remember to take my calcium (citrical petities) but am pretty bad at it. I eat a lot of dairy so I don't worry too much about it. So far my iron level has been great!

The best tasting iron I tried is from Bariatric Advantage. It is a lemon lime flavor and no joke, it tastes like a sweet tart with no real noticeable funk. There is no metalic taste. There is no nasty burb up issues either. I think its got 300% DV for iron. My prenatal has 200% DV. I just had a blood draw last week and have my 9 month post op surgical appt on Wed. I feel confident that my labs will be great! If not, I will go back to the Bariatric Advantage iron.

Lapband 8/2007. Revised to VSG 10/2010.... 170 pounds lost!

this is great to hear!! i hope the same is true for me. if not i'll go back to bariatric advantage chewables. i agree. they're not bad at all. i used to eat the strawberry ones. they're tiny and easy to chew. not bad at all.  haven't tried the lemon lime ones though. maybe i'll try those.

How are your iron and ferritin levels on your labs? I would judge by that instead of just comparing numbers of milligrams (there is also a huge difference in the amount of elemental iron that comes in different forms of iron, so mg to mg is not always a true apples to apples comparison).

If you don't mind spending a little extra, I highly recommend Proferrin iron. It's available via prescription as Proferrin Forte (whi*****ludes extra folic acid) or without a prescription (I've never seen it in stores, but I order it from Vitalady) as Proferrin ES. It's a heme form of iron, which means you can take it at the same time as calcium (other forms of iron should NOT be taken with calcium since they are absorbed by the same receptors, and calcium will win over iron). Proferrin comes in a coated tablet - just break the tablet in half and it's good to go (the coating is difficult for our sleeved stomachs to get through, so breaking in half exposes the insides for easier absorption).

I have had the same thing happen to me before with capsules where I burp up a poof of the powder after swallowing it. It was actually quite nice back when I was taking cinnamon capsules, but things like calcium are much less pleasant! I've even had the poof come out my nose before - yuck.

my labwork is scheduled for end of june. but now that i think of it they had me taking a multi and an iron. so probably the amount in the prenatal isn't enough. still i'm going to wait to get the bloodwork before i do anything. i have so many bottles of rejected iron. ugh.

i haven't heard of Proferrin iron. i'll have to look into it. is it easy to take? i mean, is it gross?

should i be worried that my prenatals are coated?

ughh..i hate taking gross stuff. lol.  right now i love these calcium chews. we'll see how much calcium i need to be taking after my labs.

thanks for the info.
