Cycle Related Questions 3 months post op
Hello all,
I realize this is the pregnancy forum, that being said I would like some advice on cycles since surgery. I had the Sleeve on 3/9/11 so I am almost 3 months out, have lost 48 lbs now too so far...WOO HOO! Right before surgery my cycles were averaging 60+ days I guess because of the weight. Well, 3 weeks after surgery I got a period on cycle day 53. After that, it came on cycle day 30. Now, I was expecting it yesterday based on the last cycle. I am now at cycle day 31.
I know all the risks of getting pregnant too soon and trust me we are protecting, however I have read so many stories and my surgeon and OB/GYN have told me stories of women becoming "super fertile" after surgery right away.
I know I want a baby, I mean hello I work with them as a career, however I want to be safe. I do not want to be high risk pregnant. I want normal.
That leads me to my questions, did you all experience crazy periods after surgery and if so what were they like? Did any of your get pregnant right off the bat even though you were protecting?
I don't believe I am pregnant because I took a test this am and it was neg. However, I have been all emotional lately and everyone around me keeps asking if I am. I am never a big cry baby with PMS and never felt on the verge of crying several times a day, over nothing.
Please shead some light for me, thanks!

For me, my cycles were very few and far between before surgery. Like, I had a 4 year span without one. Severe PCOS. After surgery however, our hormones can go nuts. Having this messes with us emotionally and can be a while before it levels out, same with our periods. Mine was normal after my first 30lbs down, but there are alot of women on here that have bad periods. It's quite different for everyone. Do talk to your dr about the pill and any other forms of bc. I'm not sure if you having the sleeve has the same kind of absorption issues as the RNY patients. I know we don't absorb the pills properly, and have to go on something like the nuva ring or even 2 bc pills, then there is always condoms.....but as you can see on my ticker, i had an oops LOL The one time i didnt use one, andddd I had double ovulated, SUPER fertile!!! It was atleast 8.5 months out before I had a BFP...but I've been fighting my sugar levels and a cpl minor things.
Congrats on ur VSG & the great weight loss so far! I too had extremely irregular cycles pre-op. It took a few cycles to "normalize" after my RNY. But it did normalize. So in your case, I wouldn't worry about your cycle right now. And as far as preventing pregnancy this early, I think you're right about that. Most bari surgeons recommend waiting 18-24 months after WLS before TTC. The WLS is a major shock to the body and then we go into super fast weight loss. Typically most people drop their excess weight within the first 12-15 months after WLS. Then a few months to stablize the body and then the bari surgeons will typically feel comfortable with TTC. That being said, being WLS'ers, we do need to be extra vigilant about our birth control. Since you had VSG, you don't have any malabsorbtion issues like us RNY or DS'ers do. I would talk to your OB about what the best BC for you would be. The BC pill might be good for you since it will... well... prevent pregnancy! And will might also help regulate your cycles. But whatever people on here say (myself included) your best bet is always to consult your doctors since every body is different and your doctors are familiar with your medical history.
Congrats again on your VSG and keep up the great work!
