Nursing and antidepressants

I'm curious if anyone has any experience nursing while taking antidepressants. I currently take a combination of Prozac and Buspar for depression and anxiety. Some of my doctors have suggested I not breast feed and some say the benefits out weigh the unlikely occuring negatives. I've gotta tell you though, having these painful, swollen, gigantic breasts with the knowledge of not being able to "put them to good use" is very frustrating. And the consideration of discontinuing my medication is, unfortunately, unrealistic as I've already tried during this pregnancy.

I'd love to hear anyone's insight or experience.

I don't have any insight for you.
I do want to let you know "drying" out after nursing stinks (if you decided to stop nursing).  I was forced to stop nursing my son 4 months after he was born. I ended up in the hospital on narcotics due to pancreatitis.  Pumping a little to releive the pressure helps.

Good Luck,  I know you will make the bes decision for you and your baby.

I took Zoloft throughout both of my pregnancies & while pumping with all my babies. This was approved by both my OB & Pediatrician. The opinions vary so much from one physician to the next depending on how conservative they are.

I am a social worker and was on celexa prior to getting pregnant. They changed it to zoloft as it is "the safest" med to be on. It is also the recommended one for nursing. I ended up stopping about 2 weeks ago as I was having eating issues and not prducing enough adn the baby was bottle feeding with formula from the beginning. I thought I dried up until today I was outside talking to a neighbor and I was leaking....I am calling my doctor tomorrow to switch back to my celexa as I feel the zoloft is useless for me and has been....I do not think that buspar and prozac are safe for nursing and I would call and ask a psychiatrist or a pharmacist. You don't want your little one to have any negative side effects or have to go through withdrawals....

I took Prozac through both my pregnancies and nursed both kids.  One, for a whole year, the other for 10 months.  No problems whatsoever.  The risks are very small and Prozac is the oldest and most studied SSRI on the market.

Good luck with your choice!
