just a small rant
I haven't commented on here much but I am addicted to the forum and how all of you are doing. You all are very supportive of each other and I think that is the best thing ever. I figured I would have a small rant with something I encountered this week. I am in the 17th week of my first pregnancy. I went to my ob that I absolutely love. Her nurse however failed to tell me the stats on a false positive for the downs syndrome test when giving me the option for the test!!!!!! Well guess what!!!!!!! Mine came back positive and I just freaked out!!!! I cried until I couldn't. Thank the Good Lord above things seem normal according to the u/s I had to have. But I could have wrung that nurse's neck after all was said and done!!!!
Thanks for listening

Maybe in cases where the results come back positive the Doctor has to be the one to inform? If that's the case - and you didn't come out right and ask her - then she was doing the right thing, right? Maybe she didn't know the stats? There's a reason you love the OB!
In any case, i'm glad you had a positive US experience.
Good luck!

Did you have your anatomy scan? Usually given between 18-20 weeks.
You can look into if they have a special womens imaging center nearby. That is what I did.....they have better equipment (high-detailed imaging &3D) and will give you a longer scan, usually. Mine lasted 90 minutes and they talked me through everything they were seeing or measuring.
Good luck.

When I was pregnant with my 1st they called me after my scan to tell me (at work mind you and this was the doc)that the baby had 2 markers for downs and that I had 3 options..a medical abortion, do nothing or have an amnio. We opted or the amnio as both of us tested + for cystic fibrosis carriers and thought we could check everything to be prepared. I cried and cired and had to wait forever for the results..when I was having it done the doctor told us that I had a higher chance of miscarring suring the amnio than this baby having downs..I thought my husband was goign to jump over the table and kill him..evertyhing with the downs came back negative and we were told the cf was negative as well..however..they never tested for the cf and made an error and after she was born our pedi called us to tell us she was + for cf on the newborn screen..she does in fact have it..but that is another story. I just wanted you to hear another flubbed up story with a positive ending!!
OOh I soo feel you with this one. It was friday afternoon when I got the call from the Specialist office. Just got out of the start of a root canal. So was already emotional. The office staff says the Dr needs to talk to you about your testing. Anytime you can come in. The Dr will make time to see you and move things in his schedule to see you.
Those words almost crushed me. I work in health care. NO dr moves his appointments to talk to you about anything good. I asked to come in right that moment. They told me the dr was already out of the office but MONDAY morning was the earlest I could come in. I tried calling my normal OB but got voice mail.
Of course the next call was to my mother where I cried hysterically. Well my mother being the woman she is called my OB without telling me what she was doing.. got through and DEMANDED someone tell her what was going on cause I was hysterical at home. My sweet OB had no idea what was going on but cause it was done at the specialist's office but she must have called him at home because she got to the bottom of it within the hour.
The normal range for the down's was 1:306 my score was 1:305. 1 point away from normal! Granted the office had to let me know I needed to come in but they seriously needed some tact on how to handle these things. I opted out of the amnio and just waited on U/S's to rule out the risk of down's. Of course they then thought they saw something on his heart so I had to go to fetal echos next but that is a whole other story.
It can be stressful but there is more false positives than you expect at first. It is something I will seriously consider not having done with my next pregnancy. It is just too stressful. I am glad your U/S turned out ok. Keep us updated.

Uuuggghhh... poor you. The nurse or whomever informed you about the triple test dropped the ball big time here! It is imperative that people be informed of the frequency of false positives with this test so they don't freak out when the blood test comes back positive!
This is exactly why I chose not to have this test, I know myself and if someone told me it was positive I would have worried myself half to death.
That being said, the 18-20 week anatomy scan is an extremely accurate test! I hope everything turns out well!
Best wishes to you!!

Thank you all for your kinds words of support and your own stories of issues!!!!!!! I am not scheduled for my anatomy scan with my regular ob until June 16th. However when the blood work came back positive they sent me for an early u/s with a specialist's office. They said everything looked normal. So I am just wondering if my regular ob will go ahead with my previously scheduled u/s. I don't guess it will hurt anything......... just gives me another look at my baby boy!! Maybe my ob won't be to mad that I found out early what I am having!! lol on the other had the specialist said that my cervix was shorter than they would like but never really said anything else about it I guess they will tell my ob and let her decide if anything needs to be done about it.
