I posted on fb asking my friends what vitamins they took while they were pregnant and my ex-cousin in law proudly proclaimed that she never took vitamins and she will never take them. wtf?? and then someone else posted under her "i didn't take any either, but don't tell my doctor lmao"

uhhh....am i missing something? why are you all proud and cheeky about not taking vitamins?? wtf?? who are you people?? did i miss the book that came out saying vitamins were bad? because i'm pretty sure they're really important. gosh that just made me so mad.

to play the devil's advocate... humans have survived and reproduced LONG before vitamins were around. Women in 3rd world countries  also have perfectly healthy babies with little or no prenatal care and/or vitamins.
the human body is pretty incredible, we don't *need* vitamins if we have a reasonibly healthy/balanced diet. In fact, there is little evidence that taking vitamins and supplements in pill form has much benefit at all (not counting WLS patients).

Personally I wouldn't chance it, I took my prenatals just to be safe.

On the same token, I know women who took prenatals religiously and STILL have babies with spina bifida.

yeah but diets have changed a lot since then. also people in other countries eat differently than we do. my ex-cousin in law is from france so that might explain that.

but even without trying to conceive, post ops like me need vitamins. so why wouldn't i take vitamins that would benefit my baby?

Like I said, not counting WLS patients.

If I tried to eat all the veggies/fruit I needed for a "normal" diet, I'd never stop eating! lol

Also, some vitamins are toxic to your baby while pregnant (vitamin A for example) so overdoing vitamins can actually be a bad thing.

I certainly don't claim to understand why those women would brag about not taking prenatals, when clearly that's to "norm" for a healthy pregnancy, but it doesn't make them neglegent or bad people.

Are they WLS patients? I didn't take one prenate the entier time I was pregnant with the triplets, I just made sure to eat a balanced diet, and with Matty they always got stuck and my insurance would not cover the chewable vits so again I just made sure to eat healthy and never took one vit (I have a lap band though, not RNY).
