i found a good prenatal! what do you think?
Well actually, don't laugh, but i've had these in my drawer for a while. I wanted to get pregnant b4 surgery so i just bought these and started taking them. Then things changed. They don't expire till december though so thats good.
Anyway these are Finest Naturals Prenatal Complete. They have 800mg of folic acid, 28 mg of iron and 300mg calcium. they say women should take 1 a day and pregnant or lactating women take 2 a day. I'm thinking i could just start taking this instead of a multi and an iron and a folic acid. this could eliminate all the pills. plus these are small and easy to take. I would of course take my vit d on the side too. I don't mind those at all.
of course i'll ask my surgeon and my doctors about this before i start doing that. but i would love to be able to consolidate! what do you guys think?

Are you sure those numbers are per one pill, or is a serving considered 2 pills (they make it confusing sometimes).
If so, they want a pregnant woman to take something with 1600mg of folic acid? And they are small? It just sounds odd...are they a regular multivite with all the other stuff in them?
Seriously, since you don't malabsorb anything, I think just 1 multi or prenatal a day is fine, along with an extra 400mg of folic acid. The folic acid tablets are very small. If you are worried about pills, look into chewbles. Bariatric Advantage and Celebrate vitamin companies will send you a nice sample packet if you email them. It's free and they base it on your surgery type. I still think you should be taking some sort of extra calcium. Goodluck.

you're right thats the amount for 2 pills. its half that for 1 pill. i should be taking extra 400mg of folic acid on addition to the 400 thats already in the prenatal?
question, the calcium thing, is it if i'm deficient in calcium? or should women take extra calcium anyway when it comes to TTC? because i was never told i had to take calcium before. but if its for the baby i'll do it.

You can never go wrong with taking calcium. Most likely you are not deficiant in it since you are young but it will be better if you start. Taking it now can help avoid future arthritis, osteoperosis, and bone disease.
My mother will proudly tell you she has never taken a calcium supplement in her life. You can hear her creaking when she hobbles across the room. Already has 3 joint replacements and one scheduled this summer (she's 59).
When you become pregnant, the baby will take everything it needs from you and possible leave you deficiant in calcium and vit D. So even though you are not preg yet and haven't been told to take any calcium, personally I would start. And I would take citrate since it is absorbed better. A common brand is Citrical petites. Even if you jusr take 2 of those a day for now (2=500 mlg) you will be doing yourself and your future baby a favor.
If you are looking for a chewable, I think Celebrate Calcium citrate plus chewables in cherry tart are pretty good. Taste like sweet tarts and each one has 500mg. Email them for a sample. They may seem expensive but will last a while since you don't malabsorb like us RNY'ers. I think I spend about $45 a month on supplements :)

HI,
A few issues here.
When you take calcium and Iron together your intestines will always absorb the calcium first and leave the iron alone, therefore the iron in these pre-natals is not going to be absorbed. You need to take iron away from calcium by at least 2 hours both before and afterwards. This is both supplements and food based calcium. Your Iron will be better absorbed if you take it with some vitamin C. Interestingly enough though food based iron will be absorbed with food based calcium in the system. i.e. you can eat iron rich foods and calcium based foods at the same time and still absorb both.
Make sure the calcium you are taking is calcium citrate and not carbonate. Carbonate is cheap and a waste of money. Your body doesn't absorb it well at all, unless you have too much acid (i.e. GERD)
Women who are trying to concieve can take up to 5mg of folic acid, I bet your supplement has 800 mcg's or .8 of a mg. Since you aren't eating as much as a regular female i would up your folic acid. I am not even TTC yet and taking prescription strength 5 mg a day. It is important that you take the folic acid BEFORE you are trying to get preggers. My Doctor told me if you start the folic acid after you know you are preggers then it is already too late. BTW have a good level of folic acid also increases your chances of having twins! ( so does eating chicken, walnuts and cavassa root)
What are you taking for Vitamin D? How much and what type? Have you had your Vitamin D tested?
you are going to have to take pills 3 to 5 times a day if you are going to get 1500 to 2000 IU of calcium in.
Have you seen this study about supplementation during pregancy after WLS? (thanks VItagarden)
Hugs,
CNC
