Regarding your question about taking a prenatal with folic acid or just your multi and folic acid.  I suggest you just add the folic acid for now.  Call your surgeon and have them order a full panel blood work to test all your vitamin levels and then go from there!  I had mine drawn back in May and all my levels were good, except I was high in iron (most women are low), so I was told to take my iron every other day.  So with taking that every other day, I also take daily a complete Multi-vitamin, sublingual B12, D3, Calcium Citrate and folic acid.  There was no need for me to take an additional prenatal or multi-vitamin at this point in time.  I do plan to have my blood drawn 2 more times during my pregnancy.  So I would suggest you keep with your current vitamins and add the folic and also calcuim (if your not taking already).  Just remember to take your iron and calcuim at least 3 hours apart as they cancel each other out!

this was SO helpful!! thank you so much!!! thats exactly what i wanted to know. i'm not taking calcium but i can start. question on that. if i take calcium with vit D, do i still have to take vit d? lol trying to see if i can cut down on the number of pills. but i will definitely add calcium and folic acid for now. and thank you on the tip about taking them 3 hours apart.

i'm having my labs done in june. so i'll find out then. if i'm not deficient in calcium levels should i be taking them anyway? for the baby?

My calcium does have D in it and I also take an additional Vitamin D.  I had RNY, so I take calcium citrate (not carbonate) because I know we can't absorb the carbonate.  I don't know if this is the case with the surgery you had.  I also don't know if Calcium or Vitamin D are ones that we can overdose on (I don't think you can....but again not sure...I mean they both are in milk right and we can't harm ourselves by drinking lots of milk.  I know that B-12 we can't overdose on).  I would call your surgeons office to make sure you can't overdose on Calcium or D3 before you start adding extra calcium!  There also might be other ladies on here that know the answer to that.

With my vitamins, I take all them in the morning when I wake up besides the iron, which I take around lunch time or early afternoon.  If you need to add an additional multi or prenatal I would take that before going to bed.  Also, some women take more than 1 calcium pill a day and those need to be spaced out as well because we only can absorb I believe 500mcg at a time (another reason why I believe we can't overdose on calcium or D).

i've been having a hard time with iron. ever since i've been doing non chewables. if i don't take them on a full stomach they make me throw up. its horrible.  does that happen to anyone? can anyone recommend a gentle iron?

also would calcium citrate chewables be ok?

Calcium citrate chews would be fine, if you can find them!  Not sure what to tell you about the iron as I don't have that problem.  I do know that they can cause constipation though!

My OB gave me something that was gentle...I'll have to see if I can find what it was  I'm at my office but I'll look when I get home. Before she gave me the script for the gentle one I  took mine before I went to bed because they really upset my stomach too.

Us VSG'ers can have issues with absorbing B vitamins due to decreased instrinic factor. I bought some sublingual B complex from Trader Joe's. I take 2-3 of them per week in addition to my prenatal. I started taking a prenatal a couple months ago because I love the Trado Joe's ones and they are so easy on my tummy. I went through many many vitamins after surgery and couldn't tolerate many of them. Prenatals have double the daily recommended amount of iron, which my body does well with.
I have a bunch of calcium citrate chews that I bought from Bariatric Adavantage... but I am switching to citrical petities. I also take vitamin D daily from Costco :)

well i already take a b12 daily. plus whatever b is in my multi. are you taking prenatals because you're pregnant or just because they give you more vitamins than a multi? i'm already taking iron. i wish i could find a way to consolidate so i could take less pills. like iron with folic acid or prenatals with iron (so i don't have to take iron).

why are you switching to citrical petites?

I am not pregnant.... waiting for October. I was TTC wihtout success for a year prior to my revision and was taking the prenatals back then and really liked them. So once I was able to swallow pills again after my surgery I went back to them. They are one of the only vitamins that don't make me sick! And I do like that they have more iron in them. I don't have to take a separate iron pill :) And, my OB wanted me to be on a prenatal for a few months before TTC anyway, so it all works out!
I am switching to citrical petites because they are cheaper than ordering the bariatric advantage chews. Plus I like being able to just swallow pills instead of chewing. When I had to stick to chewables after my surgery for the first couple months I used to daydream about being able to swallow pills again. :)
