I'm only 4 weeks out from RNY - and the test says I'm pregnant

You should ask him to recommend a high-risk OBGYN. Also, get your full lab panel drawn every month to check all your vites. Today, go to a store and buy some extra folic acid. At the very least you should be on 2 multivites a day, 1500mg of calcium CITRATE (the only kind we can absorb as post-rny) a daily B-12 sublingual or monthly shot, 2000 IU of D3 and anything else your lab results will recommend.
The calcium is important. you can only absorb 500mg at a time and has to be taken at least 3 hours apart. It cannot be taken the same time as iron or the iron will not absorb. D3 (dry vitamin D) is important because it promotes bone health and cacium absorbtion. When you are pregnant, calcium and D levels can plummet quickly. You may want to try the chewable versions. Go on Celebrate.com and email them asking for a sample, they will send you a bunch of shake mixes and flavored chewable stuff. Their cherry tart calcium chewable is actually pretty good. I take Citrical now but those are capsules and I don't know if it's too early for you to take them.
For a while it will seem like your whole day revolves around spacing out vitamins. Soon though it will become a habit and not such a pain. Don't forget about the extra folic acid. Email me if you have any questions or want to chat :)

Yes, you can order a free sample packet there based on your surgery type and also look at the Bariatric Advantage website, you can order a sample there too.

First. Breath.

Second. Congratulations.

Third. You are not the first nor are you the last to get a + test result so soon after surgery. You were doing all you could do to be responsible so no need to condemn yourself.

I am not an RNY patient but I am preggo board lurker (my post op baby was born in 06 after my lap band surgery - since then I revised to DS) but another gal who was preggo the same time I was was also just a month out from getting pregnant after her RNY surgery. That was over 5 yrs ago and she gave birth to a beautiful healthy baby boy and ironically just gave birth to her 2nd post op baby a week or so ago. I emailed her and asked her to check out your post and see what she could tell you.

I know this is scary for you. But what will be, is. You don't need to grow this embryo into a full fetus or lose all your weight in the next 30 days. Take time to nourish your body,  your baby, and your mind. You have 9 months to take this day by day. It can be done. That's not to say that something won't or can't go wrong. Just that the only thing YOU are in control of is taking your vitamins, getting the proper nourishment, and staying out  of ketosis. Just do your best.  Get in touch of a high risk OBGYN and hang out here for some moral support.  FWIW, I hope you get morning sickness. I'm not trying to be mean. Promise. For some reason, morning sickness is a signal that everything is actually fine.

Praying for a healthy and uneventful pregnancy for you.

What a beautifully supportive post. And I never thought of MS that way, so thanks for the reframe.

Around the time I had my DS, a woman got pregnant about the same week she had her surgery (probably right before surgery) and she went on to deliver a healthy baby.  I don't remember all the details and I know it was a challenging pregnancy, but they both survived.  I will look around and see if I can find her posts.  Anyway, keep your chin up.  You'll definitely want a good OB (I normally recommend CNMs or OBs depending on personal preference but in this case I'd want a very experienced OB only) and probably see a perinatologist regularly as well.

Thanks for some encouragement everyone! I was supposed to see my OB today only to get there and be told that they wont see me because my balance with them is too high. I've been going there for years and my Dr. is someone I trust so its very disheartening to be told that. Unfortunately my insurance deductibles are crazy. So, I guess I'll be starting new, just don't know where yet. The surgeon wants to see me tomorrow, Im interested in finding out what she has to say about this whole thing. I hope I can be one of the lucky ones who makes it through this! Thanks I'll keep posting.
