I'm only 4 weeks out from RNY - and the test says I'm pregnant

I'm terrified. I've been on oral contreceptives and was assured by 3 different Dr's that it would be ok. Is there anyone out there that got pregnant so soon after surgery and the baby survived? I'm afraid to hope....

were those doctors weight loss surgeons?  I highly doubt it.

the oral contraceptive are not good for RNY patients because we have problems with absorption. I doubt the surgeon would approve JUST that alone without another form of BC. I was told to use at least 2 different contraceptives. Also I was really strict to the no boom boom for 6 weeks after!

I was told by my surgeon, the NP at the Weight Loss Clinic, my OB/GYN, and the attending Dr at the hospital that my BC was fine. I specifically asked that many times because my best friend went through this after her surgery. There were no restrictions on sexual activity. They just said not to do anything that could hurt, nothing too vigorous. So yes it was my weight loss surgeon who told me, and I asked my OB about nuvaring and was told I would be fine.

I think you should call your surgeons office right away. I have not heard of anyone getting pregnant that early out, I think the closest I heard was 10 weeks post op, and if I am correct that did not turn out very good for her. To me it sounds like you were misinformed. you are not even on solid foods yet are you? You have to keep your body out of Ketosis because it is very, very dangerous for a baby! I had a very hard time keeping my sugar levels and everything else under control and I had to eat every hour to hour and half, and I was 18 months post op when I got pregnant!

Yikes, that must be very scary! I know of someone who went to my previous lapband surgeon who was actually very early pregnant the day of RNY surgery (just not showing up on the test yet.) The surgeon felt terrible but was very helpful and the patient was able to carry the pregnancy. I have no idea what her instructions were or what complications she had... just that she did it.
Keep us posted on what your surgeon says! Sounds like they will be changing their recommendations for post op birth control after talking to you!
Good luck - Nikki

When I went to my info class way before my surgery there was a gorl there who was very newly pregnant and they did not pick it up on the test and did te surgery..she found out she was about a week pregnant during the surgery..she ended up having a perfectly healthy baby, the only issues she had was the diet restrictions...

Thanks for the little bit of hope guys. I am on soft foods right now and have done fine on them so far. I hope they do change some things there too concerning birth control because its been one of biggest concerns through the whole thing. The crazy thing is before surgery I didn't even ovulate and now a month and 35 lbs lost later... here I am.

I would be pissed at my doctors if I were you. That is horrible.
Keeping it real here.....if you are planning on keeping this baby, you need to speak to the nutritionist at the WLS office asap to make sure you are getting enough of the right foods and vites. You probably will need some high calorie protien shakes. EAS makes one higher in fat/calories called Myoplex.
Since I am not one for being politically correct (or even polite) I will remind you that you have options here. Seriously consider all of them. Also consider why you had this surgery and went through all the pre-op testing and restrictions (to loses a lot of weight). Your body is pretty much sticll in shock right now from the lack of food intake and your insides are still trying to heal. Good luck.

I am seriously pissed, and I appreciate bluntness! I couldn't have an abortion, not that I judge people that do, its just not something that is right for my boyfriend or I. Even though I know the baby probably won't make it. I am doing ok since the surgery, my reasons for having it were to help with diabetes and PCOS (so I could get pregnant WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY later) the diabetes is gone and apparently I'm fertile now so if I didn't lose a ton more weight I wouldn't be to upset. I'm 5'10" and 226 so there are worse things right? I don't know what will happen, but I cannot wait to call the Dr. on Monday.
