is 1 yr long enough to wait? & ? about natural birth

 hi guys,

i'm almost 9 months out from VSG and i've lost 85lbs. i still want to lose 15more by my 1 yr surgeversary in august. ideally i would like to be at 140lbs, but at this point i would be happy with 100lbs weight loss which would put me at 160lbs.

i was planning on having plastic surgery after reaching my goal weight. but the truth is i want a baby so bad and i'm tired of waiting. so i'm opting to forgo the plastics for the forseeable future. knowing full well it will be 5yrs or so till i remove all the skin. its a sacrifice i'm willing to make.

i've been waiting so long to have my baby. this time last year i was starting the process of running tests for pregnancy and stuff. but then i decided to have wls. best decision i ever made. but now a year later i'm dying to get pregnant. i feel like i've paid my dues. what do you guys think? is 1 yr long enough to wait after wls to get preggers? i think it is.

also i was wondering....did any of you have a natural birth? water birth? home birth? or in a birthing center? i was interested in this before surgery but now with the fact that i've had my insides messed with (wls) i don't know if its a good idea. maybe i need extra supervision bc of the surgery.

would love your feedback

thanks guys

I'm right behind you at 7 months post VSG... I am also dying to have a baby! I have lost 90 pounds since surgery and my realistic goal is to lose about 50 more. I will for sure we trying at the one year mark unless my surgeon tells me otherwise. So far he has said that one year should be just fine. I am doing everything I can to make sure I stay in good health and on top of my vitamins etc. during this year so that I am ready to go in October.
Good luck! Not much longer!

I was year out Oct.. I got preggers Sept.. unplanned. I had pretty much had no big wt loss in a few months. Just 2-4lbs a month. I think the big factor is if you are still losing or at the pretty much stable point. Start folic acid before you even start trying.. whenever you start. Get labs to check your lvls before you start ttc as well.

As for water birth or centers or anything like that. OB wise I have had a pretty normal pregnancy. I just got some extra U/S's. You are not automatically high risk so I see no reason why you can't use a birth center or such. Your OB will be the best to help you determine that though.

thank you so much for this comment. makes me feel better.

oh i will for sure start taking folic acid before i even start trying. i have a bottle of prenatal vitamins i bought a while back. can you tell i've been itchin to start since forever? but of course i'll talk to the doctor about what i need to take and not just start taking whatever i got from the store.

i have lost the bulk of my weight and the loss has pretty much slowed to a crawl. i was never a fast loser. maybe 1-2lbs a week. but lately i'm lucky if i get .5lbs a week. so i think i'm pretty stable.  i would like to try to lose some more before august but in reality i'll be lucky if i can lose this last 15lbs at this rate.

My surgeon's office prefers patients to wait until 18mos post op but told me that after 12 mos you could expect a relatively safe pregnancy. I was in the same boat you are but did not conceive until I was 2.5yrs out. I think as long as you are actively seen by your PCP, OB (whether high-risk or normal), RNY surgeon, and nutritionist, you have a great chance for success! Your baby will be thrilled to know how much you wanted him or her long before they were ever conceived quite the lucky one your little bundle of joy will be!

sometimes. it depends on your body and where in the process you are in your weight loss.. if your still losing rapidly then no.. you need to wait longer.. if you are able to eat enought and sustain and even gain weight then i would said yes... you must stay out of ketosis.. thats key for fetal brain development... good luck.,, ohh and the good news is... vaginas and stomachs are not related and you should be ( barring outside issues) able to having a natual birth... ive had 2,.. and working on my third... home birth no.. im to high risk ( not because of wls)

thanks for that reminder, vaginas and stomachs are not related. :) i have to tell myself that. i know it would be  easy for a doctor to scare me into something that was unecessary.

well i'm certainly not losing rapidly. i had a stall and even gained 1.5lbs, but i was able to take it off. so i don't think gaining weight for the baby will be an issue for me.
